Belmopan Mayor Responds to PM Briceño

Sheran Palacio

Belmopan Mayor Sheran “Sharon” Palacio is one her way back from Dubai where she participated in panel discussions at COP28. Before Palacio left, she appointed Hope Amadi as acting mayor. That decision caused turmoil at the Belmopan City Council because, according to the Department of Local Government, Councilor Sanie Cal should have assumed the role. But Cal’s position as deputy mayor expired earlier this year. It’s a situation that has caused the People’s United Party embarrassment. That’s what Prime Minister John Briceño told reporters recently. Responding to PM Briceño tonight is Mayor Palacio, who we managed to catch up with at COP28.

“Who is in charge of the Belmopan City council now?”

Sheran Palacio, Mayor, Belmopan

“Belmopan city council, it is Hope Amadi. He is the person I left in charge.”

Hipolito Novelo

“You heard what the Prime Minister said?”

Sheran Palacio
“I heard what the Prime Minister said but I don’t know if he really studied exactly what happened because, basically, just listen to this. There was a meeting and the position of deputy mayor was dissolved. The person, Deputy Mayor Cal, his time came to an end. Along with that I consciously did what I did because whenever I leave the country, these councilors the behave like kids and I always have to be running back, running back. I have never ever left the country in peace to be able to do anything. I decided that coming to Dubai I can’t run back. I decided to leave someone who I know will carry out the agenda that needs to be carryout and that’s the bottom line. So, as far as I am concerned. Mayor Amadi, not mayor Amadi, deputy mayor Amadi is representing me.”

“As acting mayor.”

“The Prime Minister said that the situation in Belmopan is embarrassing.”

Sheran Palacio

“He can say whatever he chooses. But, basically I don’t agree with him. He should contacted me but that’s the entire, it has been like that and the Prime Minister knows, he is someone that I have tried to discussed with and it has not been possible. I haven’t even spoken to the prime minister, not at all and I am not afraid to say it.”
