Police Beef Up Operations Heading into Christmas
As the hustle and bustle of the season takes us into shopping areas to buy gifts and Christmas grocery, so too do thieves step up their game to see who they can pounce on to rob or steal from. But the police department has a number of operations going on in Belize City, and is also planning for two major upcoming events that draw more pedestrians than usual at strategic locations along their route. Today, Regional Commander of Eastern Division, A.C.P Hilberto Romero and the Administrator, Senior Superintendent Chris Noble told us what the police are doing and what the public should do to protect themselves.
A.C.P Hilberto Romero, Regional Commander, Eastern Division
“We want to encourage the general public, when you see anything suspicious, to call us; also, to practice safety measures when dealing with cash when you’re walking on the streets. We saw two robbers yesterday, so we want to emphasize to the public to assist us. If you have any information and see anything, then you can call us. We have several operations, patrols. We have our anti-crime operations within Belize City, all in an effort to prevent these robberies and burglaries. So we have additional personnel that will be deployed this coming week from Belmopan to enhance the patrols that we have within Belize City.”
Sr. Supt. Chris Noble, Administrator, Eastern Division
“We do have anti-crime operations where officers are brought back to work up until certain times and we have strategic operations in several areas of the city. The events that we’re looking at are normal events for us in these times – I believe the Love FM Christmas parade, and thereafter, the KREM Cycling Classic. Those are two of the major ones, and moving with what we’re supposed to be doing, we ask the public to one, have tolerance and two, cooperate with us. We do have people that will be out there. We work with the city traffic, so when it comes to traffic issues, we will be with them. And any other agency that will come on board with us, currently we do have operations with customs ongoing within the district.”
