Is Collin Francis Fit to Stand Trial for Murder?
Collin Francis, an inmate at the Belize Central Prison, appeared before the High Court today for a competency hearing. Francis, a mental patient, is accused of attempting to kill a psychiatric nurse by stabbing her. He is also accused of the deadly beat down of Nestor Vasquez Junior. That incident occurred inside the Queen Street Police Station several years ago. Ahead of that trial, Doctor Alejandro Matus testified that Francis is schizophrenic and has lost touch with reality. After hearing from the only witness, the matter was adjourned to December thirteenth, 2023 when the court will determine whether Francis is fit to stand trial. If he is found to be sane, the court will direct where Francis is to be kept, in a safe place that the court deems appropriate. Francis is being represented by attorney Bryan Neal.
