Price of Slice Bread Will Not Increase

Tonight, there is good news for consumers. The price of sixteen-ounce sliced bread will remain at one dollar and fifty cents wholesale and one dollar and seventy-five cents retail. Earlier this month, we reported that the “Collective Bakers” issued a statement in which it said that the price of slice bread would be increased to two dollars and twenty-five cents wholesale and two dollars and fifty cents retail. Well, the Collective Bakers have had a change of heart. The reason for this recent decision is a commitment from the government of Belize. A release from the Collective Barkers states “As a result of recent and multiple meetings held with the C.E.O. of the Ministry of Agriculture, Food Security, and Enterprise and the Director of the Supplies Control Unit, we have gotten a written commitment from G.O.B. that they will assist the bakers with a subsidy program, which ultimately benefits the consumer, and made a further commitment to continue discussions aimed at ensuring the viability of the baking industry.” The group says it sees G.O.B.’s commitmentas an act of good faith, and so the price of slice bread will not increase on December eighteenth.
