Brandon Gillett is Remanded to Prison on Firearms Offenses
Tonight, thirty-eight-year-old Brandon Gillett, a bailiff at the Belize City Municipal Court, is on remand at the Belize Central Prison pending bail at the High Court. He has been charged in the wake of an amateur video that has since gone viral. In the brief clip, Gillett, dressed in black, is seen brandishing a rifle in public and speaking to someone in what appears to be a threatening manner. It was enough to land the license gun holder in hot water for various firearms offences, including altering a firearm without previous permission in writing from the Firearms and Ammunition Control Board. This morning, Gillett appeared unrepresented before the lower court where he was read five charges. He then asked the court for a sentencing indication before entering a guilty plea for all five counts. However, after the facts were read to him, Gillett was not in agreement with the details that were shared, prompting the magistrate to enter an unequivocal plea of not guilty.
It is alleged that on Thursday, Gillett was attending his grandmother’s funeral when a dispute happened between his mother and other members of the family. He subsequently produced a firearm that had been altered by attaching a flashlight, pistol grip, fore grip and sights on the firearm. During the sentencing indication, Gillett was informed that the offense carries no less than five years in prison for a first-time offender. Under the Firearms Act, the magistrate is restricted from granting bail; therefore, he was taken into police custody and placed on pre-trial detention until February twenty-first, 2024. On December twenty-first, police visited Gillett’s residence in Los Lagos where he turned over two weapons, including a nine millimeter Glock pistol and a .223 Springfield Armory Rifle. When information on the rifle was run through the police database, it was discovered that the particulars of the weapon did not match the information that is presently on the system.
