Sugar Impasse was Peaceful
And another winner in the sugar impasse is the Belize Police Department. During the intense negotiations and heightened emotions that resulted in the burning of tires on the highway, there were no incidents. The police were able to keep the peace even when cane farmers temporarily prevented Agriculture Minister, Jose Mai, from leaving the SIRDI compound. On Thursday night, Commissioner of Police Chester Williams was recognized by cane farmers for his support. The B.S.C.F.A. also acknowledged all the other groups and unions who lent their support.
Alfredo Ortega, Vice Chairman, Committee of Management, B.S.C.F.A.
“We got the support of many other groups especially the leaders from Toledo that sent out a letter, sent out a release, demonstrating their support to the cane farmers. We have the teachers from Corozal branch sending their press release. From Orange Walk and other groups sending their press release. Believe me you, because of their support we managed to get this victory. And we reached to the victory, thanks to the almighty god and thanks to all those brothers that are at home but are supporting us one way or the other. Thanks to the media houses that have been here without supporting our cause and passing the message to the Belizean public to understand what is happening with us. We really thank each and everyone for the hard support that you have demonstrated for one us one way or the other. There were many times that we felt frustrated but because of the support that gave us the energy to reach where we are.”
