Annual Christmas Bird Count
The Christmas Bird Count serves to monitor avian populations. This community-driven event, conducted by the Belize Audubon Society has been held annually in Belize for over forty years. Organized by the Belize Audubon Society, the primary objective of the activity remains the careful observation and counting of birds within designated areas. These efforts yield essential data on population dynamics and distribution, forming the backbone of avian conservation initiatives. Scientists analyze trends over time, shedding light on the impact of climate change, habitat loss, and human activities on bird species. Collecting the data informs about routes for birds, as well as bird health and land use changes.
The areas covered include Gardenia, Sandhill and Old Belize Road as well as Captain Hook, Maxboro, Los Lagos, Bacab, Flowers Bank, Hattieville, Burrell Boom, Ladyville and the Belize River in the area of the Belize River Lodge.
