New Developments on Sugar Agreement
There are new developments to report on tonight regarding an agreement that is yet to be signed between the Belize Sugar Cane Farmers Association and BSI. On Thursday, we reported that after a lengthy stalemate, both parties had finally arrived at a mutually agreeable decision in respect of a new commercial agreement. A day later, attorneys for BSI and BSCFA were set to hammer out the language of the new contract before it was signed and cane would be delivered by members of the association. It was a breakthrough that was celebrated late on Thursday evening, one that was also short-lived. Tonight, after going through the weekend attempting to amicably resolve specific concerns regarding the proposed agreement, all parties are back where they began over a week ago. Earlier today, sections of the Philip Goldson Highway traversing Orange Walk District were once again blocked by disgruntled cane farmers. News Five’s Hipolito Novelo has been covering these developments since the start of the weekend and joins us live from Orange Walk with the latest on the sugar crisis.
