CitCo has new plans for deplorable Belize City streets

8jan10-4The jury is still out on whether or not the councilors will accept the prime minister’s suggestion of cutting their hefty stipends to minimize spending. However, another issue is literally rising off the pavement and beckoning at the councilor’s feet. And that is the condition of the city’s streets. The major streets in the city are in horrible condition and drivers are forced to maneuver around or in the large craters. The deputy mayor said, however, some relief may soon be in sight.

Dion Leslie, Deputy Mayor, Belize City
“The mayor and both councilors in charge of works, Councilor Dean Samuels and Councillor Eric Chang and the manager from the works department and all interested parties did a tour of the city on Monday. They spend the entire Morning on south side and the evening on north side and they just basically went to all the major streets that are trafficked by motorists and pedestrians. And we want to concentrate on that right now such as Orange Street, Freetown, Raccoon Street and other streets that we know are in a bad condition. We want to focus our funds that we have right now on fixing those streets and making it a priority.”

Jose Sanchez
“After that, is there a move towards fixing the streets that are the regular ones for busses and commuters; the regular travelers?”

Dion Leslie
“Yes, like I said, we’re looking at the main ones, most heavily trafficked ones like Cemetery Road, Orange Street; anything that we know there’s a lot of traffic on, a lot of pedestrians have to walk on everyday and we know that it’s in a bad situation. So we’re looking at those ones first but we did a synopsis of the entire city, we know all the streets, we’re aware but as of this moment we are going to focus on those one and when we finish with that then we move on to other streets.”
