Parental rights dispute evolves to police shootout
In another shooting, a dispute over parental rights escalated into a shootout between one of the parents and police officers. Twenty-two year old Kimberly Westby, of Nurse Findley Crescent in Belize City, was asleep in bed with her husband when they were awakened by an argument in their home. After leaving her bedroom, she found her friend with her ex-common law husband, Jimmy Singh having an argument. It is alleged that Singh, who was under the influence of alcohol, wanted to take their son, but the child’s mother resisted. The Westby’s intervened and Singh pulled out a nine millimeter pistol and pointed it at them. Kimberly’s husband managed to get the inebriated man to leave, but before exiting the house, Singh cranked his gun and pointed to Westby’s chest. Kimberly made the report to police at about eleven-forty Sunday night and also reported that Singh was driving a Silver Toyota Hilux with license plate number C-26854. A few minutes later, the police quickly located Singh during their patrol and he led them through a high speed chase throughout the city. Officers thought the pursuit was over when they found the Hilux parked in front of Ex-Servicemen’s League. They approached the vehicle and had to duck and take cover after shots came from the Hilux. Singh sped off and the officers fired shots at the vehicle which was finally stopped on Baymen Avenue and taken to the Queen Street Police Station compound. Police have detained thirty year old Jimmy Singh, a resident of Mahogany Street, pending charges.
