Vegetable vendor from Succutz murdered in Melchor
A vegetable vendor from Succutz Village in the Cayo District is dead, the victim of a brutal murder that occurred in Melchor de Mencos, Guatemala. There are many questions still unanswered for the family of the victim. According to thirty-one year old John Cal’s family, Cal had finished vegetable sales for the day and was at her home on Friday afternoon. He left later that afternoon with the friend in a taxi and crossed into Guatemala. That was the last time Cal was seen alive on Belizean territory. The incident happened around eight o’clock last Friday night while Cal and a friend, who prefers to remain unnamed, from Melchor socialized at Puerta Negra Bar on Calle Barrio El Centro in that bordering town. By the time news of the murder reached the Belizean side, all that Guatemalan police could say was that Cal’s body was discovered outside La Puerta Negra Bar. They promptly presented a death certificate stating that he died around eight-thirty from a bullet wound to the head. But when News Five went to investigate the incident today, Cal’s mother, Martina Cal, told through an interpreter that she has many questions about her son’s bizarre death.

“A man he come to tell me dat dehn already kill my son right there dah Melchor de Mencos, Peten right dah di bar La Puerta Negra and dehn di seh dat dehn kill he and dehn shot he pan di head.”
Marion Ali
“Why?”
Martina Cal
“I don’t know why but a friend come to tell me dat dehn see he inside ah di bar. He di drink with a next friend.”
Marion Ali
“This friend he was with drinking, what he said?”
Martina Cal
“He di seh dat he see how dehn shot him. He only see dat but he noh want to seh because he afraid because he already see di man who kill him.”
Marion Ali
“Did he say why they killed him?”
Martina Cal
“No, he only seh dat he mi di sit down beside him but he see everything weh happen and he di seh dah wah man kill he but we noh know why he kill my son.”
Marion Ali
“What are the Melchor police telling you all?”
Martina Cal
“They don’t tell us about nothing. They only tell us that they pick up he outside of di bar and they carry he to di hospital but my son was already dead. They don’t know who kill him.”
Martina Cal believes her son was also robbed because he left home with a hundred and forty dollars on him and Guatemalan police found no money on him at the scene. When we visited the Benque Police Station they told us that because the incident happened on Guatemalan territory the investigations would have to be conducted by Guatemalan police, who we gather when we visited the Melchor Police Station, are doing nothing about the incident. Meanwhile, the Cal family buried their loved one on Sunday.
