A.G. addresses Legal Affairs Committee of CARICOM
Earlier this week, we heard the Attorney General’s bold statements on the state of affairs in the judiciary and today we found him addressing a meeting of the Legal Affairs Committee of CARICOM being held in Belize for the first time. At a brief opening ceremony this morning, Attorney General Wilfred Elrington discussed the committee’s responsibilities and what the various attorney generals, law ministers, and legal counsels will be talking about.
Wilfred Elrington, Attorney General
“According to the revised treaty of Chaguaramas, the Legal Affairs Committee is charged with providing the community organs and bodies with advice on treaties, international legal issues, harmonization of laws and other legal matters. It also our responsibility to draw attention to and offer legal advice on the legal issues we determine to be important. And indeed the agenda for these two days of meeting is reflective of out mandate and full of those important legal issues. The exercise to amend the revised treaty of Chaguaramas is no small feat, the CARICOM Secretariat and SOLAC have put in a tremendous amount of work to present to this meeting a series of recommendations for amending the revised treaties. We will deliberate on these recommendations at this level and do the necessary work before forwarding the recommendations to the intergovernmental task force.”
The meeting ends on Thursday.
