Police investigating what led to murder during football game
The murder of twenty-seven year old Salvador Jose Martinez, which occurred on Monday evening during football games at the M.C.C. Grounds, remains a mystery. So far there has not been any arrest in the murder, even though there were many witnesses who saw when Martinez was stabbed as he attempted to stop a fight during a match between Nazarene and Ladyville Technical high schools. Since the stabbing, various high school principals have lashed out at the Police Department accusing them of falling short in providing security for the games. Today, the Acting Press Officer for the Department, Assistant Superintendent Bart Jones explained that there is a thorough investigation ongoing to determine what led to Martinez’ death. As to why there was no police presence, Jones admitted that in some instances, resources are scarce.

“A few minutes ago I spoke to one of the investigators at the Crime Investigation Branch who indicated that a person is being sought at this time and the investigation continues.”
Duane Moody
“Allegations against the police officers were that no officers were present. And the principals of the schools stand by their word saying that no police officers were there. In fact, there were two off-duty police officers, parents of the students at the football game that came and intervened what happened there, why weren’t police officers there? And apart from that, they are putting the whole murder on the shoulders of the Police Department. Tell us about that.”
ASP Bart Jones
“As you rightly said there were no police officers on duty at the venue at the time. That, we are in fact, conducting an internal inquiry into whether in the media as well Mister Sutherland has indicated that he had requested police and so the internal inquiry is to indicate who he had spoken to and why in fact no police officers were there. There are times when due to man power sometimes that the requests are made and we just need to follow up.”
Duane Moody
“Mister Sutherland also said that this is not the first time that they’ve requested police presence and they did not show up, that it has been ongoing for several games, several weeks, maybe even months. What is the Police Department doing to have something like this happen?”
ASP Bart Jones
“Well it’s indeed an unfortunate incident and indeed because of the allegations being made it makes us look bad. However, like I said, it is for us to investigate and make corrective measures.”
Martinez was stabbed several times as he tried to part a fight that had ensued between one of his friends and another man.
It’s unfortunate to have lost life at a futbol game rather than just points. In 1993 I played with Holly Redeemer Upper School (couch: Mr. Murray) and achieved the 1st central championship; in 1995 SJC High School 2nd in central division (couch: Mr. Gomez); SJC 1996 1st Central champs and 1997 1st in central & national division (couch: Anthony Michaels). Since then, almost every game for us was a battle on and off the field. We requested police support but only to fall short in 2010 for Salvador. Ironically, Nazareen High School seem to still be in the picture. Futbol is a seasonal sporting event and strict measures need to be placed. We have a minister of sport, right? The polices’ job is to protect and serve, right?
