Broadcasting Authority axes Centaur Cable from more subscribers
Earlier this month, Centaur Cable owned by the Briceño brothers of Orange Walk Town, was directed by the Belize Broadcasting Authority to disconnect cable subscribers in Maxboro, on the Northern Highway. That license was then transferred to Helen Castro, the wife of Edmund “Clear the Land” Castro, the UDP Area Rep. Centaur has said it is heading straight to the court to settle this issue. While those residents are still without cable, another controversy has erupted. Centaur received a letter today from the BBA instructing it to immediately disconnect subscribers in two other areas. The first community is known as Gentleville, located in the area of the Burrell Boom cutoff, and has only eight or so households. The disconnection is perplexing since it is unlikely that anyone would want to invest for such a small number of subscribers. Centaur was also told to cut off cable at the Corozal Free Zone. Word is that when Centaur acquired the operations it was from another operator already in the Free Zone. At the time, the position of the Corozal Free Zone Management Agency was that under the Free Zone Act it was responsible for issuing licenses to all businesses operating in that jurisdiction. As such, the cable operators were not required to apply for license to the BBA. Instead, they were required to set up a Free Zone company for the express purpose of providing cable operations. That was done and Centaur has been operating in the Zone for years. It is now known that the BBA has granted a license to another company known as Baymen, but this new company has not set up shop and is likely to take months to do so. Well tonight, the families in Gentleville and businesses in the Free Zone stand to be without cable much as those on a portion of Sandhill.
I think Belizeans need to realize that the UDP government is no less corrupt than the Said Musa administration was. Call for a third party to be made and take the country back from these corrupt so called leaders.
Ever since I was a kid, I questioned these very childlish acts. They are not necessary and would question the legitimacy of the governing bodies. What happened to warnings and notices? No entity ever just cuts off a license. I worry for the future of what is to come to my country if things like this happen. Politics is killing what was once a dream of our people. Slowly we are sinking, yet no one is calling foul.
as a people we need to stop allowing these abuses by our leaders(of any party) and start holding them accountable, to a higher standard.
This is ridiculous and something must be done immediately to stop these henious acts. GOB is really striving all they can to totally screw up our country and as Belizeans we must stand up against them.
it’s ashame that our politicians have no business sense, cutting off customers without notices is intolerable, what were we doing before cable came to Belize ? quit the politicing, get down to business and keep the country moving forward. Belizeans needs to have more positive thinking and pride in our country, reading the news daily I get nothing positive from Belize it appears that we are becoming more like the lawless tribes in some foreign nations rather that acting like civilized people
