Lovers murder and suicide in Orange Walk

bodyTwo persons from Orange Walk Town are dead tonight. And it is not the usual type of homicide but a shocking case of murder and suicide. The horrifying ordeal took place on Thursday at a popular hangout spot on Princess Diana Street. It was about four-thirty in the evening when an intoxicated man entered Las Margaritas Cool Spot and fired the fatal shot on his common-law wife and then turned the gun on himself. The couple lived together and co-owned the bar for years, so when one of them wanted out, it was too much for the other to handle… and he snapped. Both bodies have been brought to Belize City for post-mortem examinations, but News Five’s Delahnie Bain headed to the scene of the crime to get the facts on what transpired.

Delahnie Bain, Reporting

“Til death do us part”: that is the promise made in marriage, and while the owners of Las Margaritas Bar were only in a common-law relationship, their separation led to a shocking crime of passion… murder and suicide.

Jennifer Depaz, Daughter of Deceased

“I went, since I attend Muffles College, I went to register and when I came I got to know from some people that my mom had been killed. So I hurry went by my house and there they told me that she got shot on the head by my step-father.”

Cpl. Jeffrey Williams, O.C., CIB, Orange Walk

“We found a lady by the name of Santos Concepcion Depaz, thirty-four year old, owner of the business; we found her behind the counter in a sitting position with apparent gunshot wound to her head. Thereafter, we found another man, we found to be her common-law husband. His name is Cruzito Nicholas Chan, forty-one years. He was just outside the building about twenty yards with gunshot wound to the right side of his head.”

Santos Concepcion Depaz Alvarez died on the spot, while Cruzito Chan was taken to the Northern Regional Hospital and then to the K.H.M.H., where he was on life support until he passed away Thursday night. Both police and Alvarez’ family believe that the break-up combined with alcohol are what fueled Chan’s rage.

Jennifer Depaz

“What I know is that he was drunk and my mom wanted to separate from him since Sunday and that was when everything started to develop until yesterday when he shot her.”

Delahnie Bain

“So they have a lot of problems; domestic problems?”

Jennifer Depaz

“No, it  was only Sunday when everything started when my mom told him that she wanted to separate. He had already threatened her that he was gonna kill her first then he was gonna kill himself but my mom didn’t really pay him attention since it was not the first time that he was saying that to her.”

Police say a patron of the couple’s business was also injured during the shooting.

Cpl. Jeffrey Williams

“There is one more person also that got shot whilst inside the bar socializing. His name is Jael Cob. He is presently at the Northern Regional Hospital. He sustained a gunshot wound also to the right side of his back.”

las magaritas cool spotThe murder weapon, Chan’s licensed point thirty-eight revolver, was recovered from the scene. Delahnie Bain for News Five.

Alvarez has three daughters who will now be in the care of their grandmother. It is the second murder and first suicide for this year.

There are so many women involved in very dangerous and threatning relationships. many times they don’t look at the obvious signs that these criminals portray. THREATS should be taken serious. I mean come on!! if someone threatens to kill you and not only once nor twice but…. many. report him!! why geopordize your safety and that of you family’s. but then again- now a days, belizeans have to think how seriously your report will be taken at the police station. but still even if the law fails, it is worth trying. and obviously women have to do their part… look at those signs… for goodness sake!! and save your life don’t let those insane, cowards, selfish people take it away… my sympathy to the family who lost thier mom, but we can all learn from that.

First of all you need to do your research first . Don’t just publish one side of the story interview both sides find out what really happened. Please interview both families one has there lie and the other has the truth. You should get the chans side where did all his money go? How come I don’t here anything about his kids?? They have a right to have a part of this story!!!

  7. nellieadred@hotmail.com says:

I agree that its a shame for the amount of crime that is constantly happening in a small place such as belize, the goverment needs to put a serious legislation in place and severely punish all those responsible for planning or carrying out such crimes. these people really need to find God, and allow him into their lives.

  8. Esmael says:

My sympathy goes out to the family who lost their mother, so many women in our society are involved in very dangerous and abusive relationships.
The men that commit these heinous crimes towards women are COWARDS!!!!

  9. EDA says:

Domestic violence should be taken seriously. If someone threatens you you should report it or seek intervention. One never knows what is going on in the others mind. May this be a wake up call to all women and men. It could happen either way. My sympathy goes out to the families.

When adults can not control their emotions the Children suffers as in this case. The chn. of both parents are the ones most affected by this unfortunate incident. You are all in prayers. Just remember that you are your own special person not your parent. This was not your doing do not ever feel guilty. hind sight is a son of a b**** don’t let it get the better of you.My nieces and nephews had expierenced this same faith. Most of them are doing good.
Girls you are orphans listen to your oldest sister. She is a little wiser, love each other no matter what. Only Good things will continue to steer your lifes. Try and look at the positive things that is happening now, stay in the present. Remember the wonderful memories of your parent. Continue to love each other. Family is a great support of strength. My Sympathy to both Families.

Everytime a crime happen in any part of the world where a man in cowardice kills his wife, the mans’ family cries fowl play. Now I know it seems that their is a shortage of Real men in our poor country seeing men going to prison for small crimes everytime I read this news medias’ posting and others but this is a crime that was given a quick response. I’m not saying that I’m happy he killed himself but rather I am pissed that he didn’t have the courage to just remove himself, He is a COWARD that is not to be argued, he thought only of himself when he did this. He removed the Love and consideration of his children by doing this assinine assault on their childhood.
Now to the family of this man I hold no Hatred towards you but I really hope you keep these kids in your hearts and minds cause they will need your guidance as well. You are now responsible for the life and safety of these kids (even if you don’t consider them your Relatives) they need to see that Not everyone is like this man. To the Family and friends of Santos Concepcion Depaz Alvarez I give my deep and humble regards for this loss you now suffer. As well to the Friends and family members of La Enramada Restaurant (Don’t Know your Last Names) who I’ve met before and knew of this young lady to be a relative of theirs, Please keep your heads high I know this only adding to long list of losses you’ve suffered in the last 3 years my family will grieve with you.

The law need to get strict on these coward guys take them to jail and lost the keys they don’t need to be out in society again. We don’t appreciate these kind of idiots in amongs us in society. My greatest Sympathy to both families.

  20. macal rivera says:

it is so sad, but sometimes women have to understand that adultrey is a sin before the eyes of God,
Alcohol abuse is a serious problem in Belize, you guys make your choice, and the wrong choices you make has a consequence, the sins of the parents fall on the children, but its not too late for the orphans girls, God will surely take care of them.

  21. beth says:

I do not agree with chan but put yourselves in his position. it is very hard to be taken as a fool by your partner if you don’t love your partner leve him or her don’t go about playing him or her that is very hurtful. bbut he did very wrong because he was only thinking about his pain not the kids left behind.

  22. Darlene says:

To Family Friend of Chan. He pull the trigger not the lady, when a person does wrong to you, it is not up to you to take a life. I feel bad that their kids have to suffering without parents, very sad. We all have skeleton in our closet but we do not take a life regardless of what the other party did. There is no excuse for taking someone life. So we do not need to air their dirty laundry, I am sure they both have fault. The fact speaks for itself he took her life and his do not make excuses for him.

  23. Eve says:

I am against domestic violence but if you are in a relationship were the person is sick of any kind of addiction that is not healthy for you and for your children anyone living under this circumstances must leave the realationship for good before its too late.

  24. sasha says:

How sad, 2 lives lost. His really didn’t matter, no matter what, because he chose to take the easy approach. Money means nothning, u can have it now and be gone tomorrow, but a life with some love, understanding and compassion endures, this is why she did not put attention to his abuses., now her child is left without that SPECIAL PERSON, THAT NO ONE CAN BRING BACK.

  25. Cruso! says:

only who feels it knows it!!!!!!!!!!!!!! such is life people!!!!!!!!!!!!! Not fair!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  26. mello gial says:

Not so long ago, w used to walk from aradise down to Banquitas, we would sit and watch the ferry go back and froth across the river, while we watche dthe sunset. Main street drag boasted some good activities, basketball, tacos, panades, movies, People’s Store, Banks, Guinness Club, Burgos Store, Urbina’s, Losckot’s, Ava’s, menonite carts etc, we had stores, food, people, BSI was bumpin and rocking, cain money was abundant, everyone had jobs, we were all building homes, we had three colleges, several schools, soccer, bar b ques, dances in the park,
Jim’s cool pool, Burns riverside entertaiment, horseracing, theaters, etc. Kids used to be very respectful, young people had fun, so what has happened???? Cociane, corrupt police department, disrespectful tudents and fraternizing parents, poor education system, drugs, dreads, and violence, kids walk around wth bling, bikes, touch phones and IPods, nice threads,
but no real purpose in life. Come’on OW w can and should do better, Gaspar Vega, Johhny Briceno, you owe the youth of that beautiful sugar city, mor than you are giving. Get real, you hve not done your job!!!!!! neither of you two………look at Mandy walking the strret on foot encouraging the youths to do the correct thing and being a good citizen who wants what is good for his town.
Send your police officers on patrol, hold them accountable, stop this nonsense of people getting bambuzzled by the cops who then get released freely without consiquence. We never had a town so violent in the history of OW. We owe this to our youth, keep them safe, keep them in school, make the parents responsible, keep the drugs off the street, don’t encourage it………don’t tell me you are not aware of what goes on Gravel Lane, Riverside Side, Pal Mar, Rambo Town, for example?, and this has been happening for years………Stop it guys, clean up the drugs in OW

  27. alex says:

hmmh that is some cray thing

  28. Elgin says:

That’s what happens when you live a double life.

  29. kikaC says:

I don’t think that is love, because when you love somebody you should keep her and not hurting her. Why not left her alone and go about his business be cause he don’ love her in the first place. Now that she might have got somebody jelous comes in. Most women are neglected but when they decided to be strong and move on in life they should be left alone. Not all women can take abuse but they can do better in life when men frustrate them. Think about the children left with no parents to support them or even the fear and loss they will grow with. Life goes on. You don’t want rrelationship with me go a head leave the bad one and find you way the way you want it. You had the free will to do so why take the life of the mother who ha to be resonsible for your own children.

  30. Maud from Chicago says:

Men or women see nothing wrong with adultry in Belize, it is culture…. Knowing someone is married doesn’t stop anyone from going after what they want. and then, there are consequences….

Belizeans need Jesus….Under half a million people for all the killings that are taking place in the country, So sad….

  31. Ready freddy says:

GOT THAT RIGHT “TILL DEATH DO US APART” LOL, THERE IS NO JESUS OR GOD EXIST..WHAT BELIZE NEED IS MORE EDUCATION FACILITIES TO EDUCATE PEOPLE , MOST People Who Does This Kind Of Crime Are Lack OF Education…My religious views , This is my view devoted to my thoughts and personal beliefs. I know some of you may be saying “oh no, not another one of those,” but I assure you that this one is different if only for the fact that I am not preaching or recruiting. I am just elaborating on what I have come to believe without the help/force of my parents.

Lets see where to begin, I will start by listing what I believe without explanation, and then I will come back to explain things.

    1) My personal beliefs can be classified under the New Age, New Thought, Neo-Pagan religions.

    2) I do not believe in organized religion.

    3) I believe that everyone, every creature has a soul.

    4) I do not believe in God.

    5) I believe that everything that happens is predestined.

    6) I believe that to become an individual you must work hard.

    7) I believe in past lives and rebirths.

    8) To each his own.

    9) I believe that anger and hatred only make us sick and forgiveness lets us move on.

    10) I believe that everything and everyone is important.

    11) I believe that there are some people you meet in life who will change the way you are.

    12) I do not believe in heaven or hell.

    13) I believe that judgment based on appearance is wrong.

    14) I believe that everyone should try to love life.

    15) I believe that we can learn many things if we only listen.

    Think about it ….Ready Freddy

To the “friend of the Chan family” whether or not the readers or publishers of the story has it wrong, it still does not disput the fact that a woman has been shot and killed by the man who at one time claim to have loved her. Who cares about the money

  33. Erica Lopez says:

This is a case of Domestic Violence! It shows a HISTORY of violence and yes it is a learned behavior.

  34. verleeene says:

I believe in God. It is like the wind. I can’t see it, but i can feel it. No matter what i understand that He has given us all a free will. All i can do is pray for the family. Sorry

  35. Anne says:

I am an educator. I believe if coping skills are taught from pre school, our men would be able to handle their dissappointments. I am glad to say that pre schools are dealing with these skills. In addition, parents need to intervene from very early too. Let our boys cry. It is human!!!

  36. FRIEND of chan family (2) says:

TO YOU A.LL READING THIS… IT WASN’T DOMESTIC VIOLENCE. DID THE “REPORTER” FINISH DOING HER JOB?? WELL THERE’S MORE TO THAT STORY. GET THE IDEA CLEAR AND TRUE FACTS. WHAT HAPPENED TO ALL THE MONEY HE HAD (WHAT IF SHE WAS A GOLD DIGGER)? DID THEY WENT MORE INTO DEPT WITH THIS CASE? DID THEY MADE IT CLEAR? THEY DIDN’T BOTHERING GETTING THE SITE OF THE STORY FROM WIDE,SONS AND DAUGHTER FROM MR. CHAN? ALL THEY DID WAS GETTING ONE SIDE OF THE STORY. TO “Beautiful 1′ DO YOU KNOW THE STORY CLEAR? DO U KNOW WHAT ALL WAS HAPPENING IN THAT RELATIONSHIP? BEFORE U PUT UP COMMENTS LIKE THIS THINK.. THINK TWICE AT LEAST. YEA HE SHOT HER BUT DO YOU KNOW WHY?? DID THEY SAY WHY? AND NOT ONLY TO YOU BUT TO EVERYONE ELSE… NO ONE KNOWS WHAT WAS HAPPENING BETWEEN THEM.

AND IF THIS IS GOING TO BE LIKE THIS.. THERE SHOULD BE SOME PUNISHMENT FOR ALL WOMEN ENTERING INTO OTHER PEOPLES LIFE AND DESTROYING WHAT THEY HAD. I BELIEVE SHE HAD FAULT TOO. SO REALLY TAKE TIME AND ANALYSIS THIS CASE CAREFULLY.

diana_joy86- IF THERE ARE WOMEN INVOLVED IN DANGEROUS AND THREATENING RELATIONSHIP WHY THEY STILL IN IT? IT SEEMS THAT THEY LIKE IT BECAUSE THEY STILL IN IT… WE ARE NO ONE TO JUDGE.

tamara- AM PRETTY SURE YOU KNEW WHAT WAS HAPPENING THEN YOU COME ON THIS PAGE TO PUT UP SUCH AN HYPOCRITICAL COMMENT.

Evelyn, jinel, macal rivera, beth – NOW THAT IS MORE OF AN POSITIVE COMMENT AND LOTS OF RESPECT.

wE ARE NO ONE TO JUDGE… BELIEVE WE ALL SHOW GET THE RIGHT AND TRUE FACTS AND THE INVESTIGATIONS AFTER THE INCIDENT. YOU’LL GET SURPRISED WHAT WAS THE REAL SIDE OF THIS STORY.
