Man disappears while swimming across Mopan River
A Belize City resident is believed to have drowned on Monday in waters between Belize and Guatemala. On January twelfth, twenty-three year old Darwin Grey left his home on Flamboyant Street in Belize City without informing anyone of where he was going. The following day two of the four young men with whom he left, showed up at Grey’s home and informed his father, Harrington Grey, that Darwin went with them to Melchor. When they were ready to return to Belize, instead of using the border they decided to swim across the Mopan River. The men made it back, but unfortunately, Darwin slipped under the water and did not resurface. A search and dive team scouted the area to locate his body but nothing was found. Today, we spoke with his sister, Stephanie Grey who told us that the alleged drowning of her brother is unconfirmed and that the family is hoping that it’s not so.

“This is the story that one of the man come and give us. He said he and my bredda was crossing cross di water and my bredda slip down pan di rock and drop pan ih head. Dat was fi he first story. Di next story he come and say he mi di walk wid my bredda cross di water and he turn round and he neva si my bredda back ah ahn. But I di seh if five ah dehn went together, my bredda deh back ah he; if he drop inna water obvious he was si di water splas and he mi wah see something happen. So di story—I noh want di point out nobody, but dis dah my instinct bout di story. Dis sound really suspicious. Di other four man weh mi deh wid ah, dehn seh dehn neva mi di cross so, dehn seh dehn gone cross da Santa Elena gone park inna wah private property and dehn seh police come wake dehn up. If police come wake dehn up and none ah dehn noh have no license, nor di back ah dehn vehicle noh have no license plate, so weh you think police wah just wake dehn and noh ask fi license and licese plate especially inna wah private proverty? So he come and dehn left benque Viejo and dehn reach Belize five o’clock, neva mek no report dat my bredda missing dah benque and when dehn reach Belize they still noh gone da the police station. Dehn come dah my bredda house and tell my nadda bredda weh dah firefighter dat my bredda missing. So my bredda want know why dehn neva mek wah report. So my bredda come da our house Tuesday morning about five-thirty and my bredda di tell we di situation and tell my mah “Bamba” missing. I di try fi consider and figure out how my bredda wahn missing if he and dis Spanish man and five ah dehn gone together. How only two ah dehn end up inna di water and ih just… I noh know.”

“Like I seh, I noh want pin point nobody but my instinct is ih either foul play or we have to wait pan di body. I noh want di pin point nobody and seh dis one yah do it and dah one deh do it. Di body right now dah di evidence if he dead or alive.”
But the Greys’ fears may be confirmed soon as a body at the morgue in the Garden City might be Darwin. The family has provided his social security card to the Belmopan authorities for identification.
