Son of murder victim held by police for alleged ties to the crime

It was a gruesome scene last Thursday night when tragedy struck an Orange Walk Town family.  The murder of fifty-three year old Baldemar Moguel at his family business on Stadium Street has left neighbours fearful to venture out of their homes. But the real shock is perhaps what police have confirmed to News Five.  Up to late this evening, three persons are in custody for the murder, one is of the son of the murder victim. Police are linking the son to the getaway taxi that was spotted speeding away from the scene immediately after Moguel was shot and killed in front of his wife.  While police would not give details, they did confirm that the son is detained and that charges should be forthcoming by Tuesday. They stopped short, however, of saying if all three will be charged. And this is why their names are being withheld.   Moguel’s wife was standing behind the counter just before eight on Thursday night when two youths arrived on separate bikes entered and his store.  At the same time, Moguel was returning with merchandise for another customer, when the gunmen opened fire on him. They turned on his wife, Christina, but the gun snapped twice. Nothing was stolen and the gunmen fled in a getaway taxi parked about three houses away.  The name of the driver of the vehicle has not been released.  The detention of one of Moguel’s own children places a special spin on the possible motive of the crime, which was initially thought to be a botched robbery.
