Wanted in the US and Belize; Gary Seawell apprehended in Esperanza

Gary Seawell

Gary Seawell

He’s been a fugitive since February of 2007 and today the luck of Gary Seawell, ran out when an ongoing anti-drug, anti-gun operation resulted in his capture. Seawell was busted three and a half miles behind Esperanza Village, Cayo; a mere ten miles away from the police station. If his name doesn’t jolt your memory, well maybe the names Duane and Mark Seawell will. Those are his brothers who were apprehended for drug trafficking and money laundering in 2006.  Duane is being held in custody by US Drug Enforcement Agencies after he was apprehended in Jamaica and taken to the US while Mark faces extradition on the same charges. But the apprehension today of the third wanted brother is big news and Marion Ali was in San Ignacio and the farm where more drama unfolded before our cameras.  Here’s her report.

Marion Ali, Reporting

This is thirty-three year old Gary Seawell, the man who has been eluding law enforcement authorities for the past three years.  At one point police thought he had absconded our borders, but today he was nabbed less than ten miles from the San Ignacio Police Station.  Officer Commanding that Police Station, Superintendent Paul Wade explained how they inched in on their wanted man.

Supt. Paul Wade, O.C., San Ignacio Police Stationguns and ammo

“At around ten fifteen a.m. this morning, San Ignacio Police were conducted the anti-crime operation about three and a half miles off the outskirts of Esperanza Village. During that operation, police executed a search on a farmhouse that was located in that vicinity. At the time, the house was occupied by Gary Gordon Seawell, thirty-three years entrepreneur of Ladyville, along with his common-law-wife Tanisha Ayuso of Belize City. During the search of that residence, police located four assault rifles, one handheld grenade, an assorted amount of ammunition, a bullet proof vest and three hundred and sixteen point one grams of suspected marijuana.”

Marion Ali

“How long do you think he was there?”

Paul Wade

Supt. Paul Wade

“Well, we are investigating that. I am not sure about that at this time.”

Police say it was their close links with the community that led them to the fugitive.

Marion Ali

“Mr. Seawell was wanted by the US for at least a couple years now. Do you think this is where he’s been hiding out ever since?”

Supt. Paul Wade

“Well, I’m not certain when or how long he was residing in that area. We recently got the information and we act upon it. Any type of weapons that we took off the street is very important for our department and more important for our citizens.”

Marion Ali

“What type of grenade is that? Is it one of the same British types?”

Supt. Paul Wade

That is being investigated but one senior officer from the B.D.F. who looked at it, commented to me that more than likely it is one of the British types.”

But perhaps the most startling news came when police confirmed to us that the M4 Carbine that was stolen from the Belize Defense Force on January tenth was also among the four weapons seized during the raid.  Along with Seawell and his girlfriend, Tanisha Ayuso, were also four children who police believe are theirs.  Those children have since been placed with relatives.

We were taken by police and B.D.F. to the scene where the raid occurred and after the three and a half mile drive we had to mount a steep hill for ten minutes where drama unfolded.

Marion Ali

“Police were in the process of escorting the media to the scene of the raid, that little house on the hill, when we stumbled upon another apprehension. The man, Anthony Garnett, who claims to be only a friend of the detained, said he was just in the process of building this tent when police intercepted him.

“Wi might as well mek di wolf look like di wolf because dat dah weh ih all about all di time. I dah wah law abiding citizen and just because I come tek care ah mi things… I noh got nothing fi seh. I wasn’t here at the time. I deh yah now when dehn come si I just di come. I have dis house weh I di bring up yah so dah dat I di come bring up. Unnu, unnu self pass di board dehn dah back deh. Dat dah all weh I could seh.”

Keith Swift, Channel 7

“Did you know Mr. Seawell?”

Anthony Garnett

“I noh got nothing fi seh.”

Marion Ali

“Are you related to him?”

Anthony Garnett

“I noh got nothing fi seh but dehn seh I’m under arrest so I really. I noh like dehn thing. All ah dis dah abuse to my rights.”

The man gave his name as Anthony Garnett, a forty year old taxi driver of Santa Elena Town, Cayo. He told us he and a brother were caretakers of the farm where Seawell was nabbed earlier and that he only went there to secure a generator. He would not confirm or deny our questions of whether he knew of the high-powered weapons but he did say he and Seawell were “Rasta buddies”.  The officer who detained him said he will be detained pending charges of Harboring a Wanted Prisoner.  Meanwhile, Seawell and his girlfriend face charges of Possession of high powered weapons and Drug Trafficking. Marion Ali for News Five.

The extradition request for brothers Mark, Duane and Gary originated in the U.S. in October 2006.  U.S. officials took Duane from Jamaica against his will and his family claimed back then that his rights under treaty obligations with Belize were breeched.  Seawell had retained former Director of Public Prosecutions, Kirk Anderson to fight his case in Jamaica, but before the motion could be filed, law enforcement officials put his client on a plane to the States. Following Duane’s arrest, authorities here picked up his brother Mark at his Belama home, also on a federal warrant and detained him pending extradition.

Good one for the fight against drug trafficking in Belize!

As a Belizean citizen who detests the drug trade and have personally witnessed the damage it has caused my community, I’d like to thank the U.S. officials who issued the extradition request and I’d also like to thank our poice department for cooperating.

May more drug dealers be captured!

  3. Lisa says:

  4. EDA says:

These boys come from a good family! So this just goes to show that society has the tendency to blame the parents..” See whe he cum fram” is not a true saying.
Sad that Gary has to leave his kids behind now. It is also sad that his babies’ mamma is now going to be charged too. Aww! The damage that he heart can do!
I guess for every action there is a consequence. Three sweethearts these brothers were as kids now caught up in the FAST money.
Hope that this a lesson to others out there.

I hope justice take place, these people should go in jail for the rest of their lives, how dare they live with all these weapons especially the grenade. Police should do everthing in their power to find out how they got the grenade and the BDF rifle, soemthing fishy is going on and I believe some top people involved trying to make the government look bad.I applaud the San Ignacio police and hope that you stand strong on this one to see these people in jail for a long time, Police please don’t allow anybody to buy you, I don’t want to hear later that you have amnesia or police records were lost.
I will keep an eyes on you guys and follow up on this story.

  6. Indy says:

Good job Cops! We need more action. There are plenty of drugs going on every where! Border security should be a must!

  7. Elgin Martinez says:

It’s a shame how quick we the Belizean people respone to the American Law enforcement authorities request to extradite Belizeans to the US to face charges but don’t even want to cooperate with our own law enforcement authorities in Belize to stop the murder of our own people. The only reason this guy was caught is because John Walsh went to Belize to use the Belizean people as snitches.I don’t condone violence or any kind of lawless activities however Belizeans got to stop looking up to the slave masters.I would just hope that you snitches give the Belizean authorities thesame support you all gave John Walsh in capturing Belizean Citizens to be extradited to the US to face charges.

  13. Tyadia says:

If it weren’t for the extradition request by U.S. officials, I doubt anything would have happened .. just saying.

  14. haad says:

These people have to get what’s coming to them. they do wrong so they need to be punished. plus the worst thing is that they are giving my little village a bad name. no seawell ever lived in esperanza nor this fellow Garnett. they just show up and start living there and try to fit in so that no one would suspect anything but deep down us as innocent neighbours would never know their evil intentions.

  15. Guillermo lopez says:

It seems that Belize has become so lawless, that it has become safe haven for dangerous criminals hiding from justice. Why did it take so long to apprehend this dangerous fugitive? How many more America’s Most Wanted are living within our midst?

  16. lisa says:

thank heavens they aren’t in the Belize justice system, cause they would be out by 9th of march.

  17. jinel says:

that’s so sad for the wife and kids. But my question is why was she with him? Knowing dat he’s wanted and he had those things on him. She didn’t know what would be the consequenses, so sad lol my heart goes out the the kids mostly.

  18. J says:

Its kinda mess up… cause it is true…if the US didn’t request for him, the GOB would not do nothing!! Dem police high people mussi know which ones are the major drug lords in BZE but nada happens! hmmmm kinda strange… I wonder somtimes if high ppl in politics are involved!

  19. reggie says:

He is lucky to be alive.Think about the innocent people that got kill. From the kind of bussines he involve in.

  20. reddy freddy says:

  21. G 4 Life says:

Bun fiah pan all haters towards the seawell them…these guys are good men…they just making a living and trying to survive just like all of us. only that they don’t got the opportunity like some of us…”jobs aren’t flowing like the wind”. they do what they got to do what we go to do to survive…hatters who are you to judge them! only jah have that ultimate power to pass judgment.

  22. The People Had Enough says:

Should be on the top of the list for the LOS PEPES’.

LOS PEPES’ PEOPLE, WE NEED TO FORM OUR OWN LOS PEPES’ IN BELIZE AND CLEAN UP OUR OWN COUNTRY, !@#$ THE GOVERNMENT!!!!!

Before you can remake a bed you need to wash the dirt of the sheets and these murderous scum are the dirt; its too late for them they need to be sent to wait in purgatory for God to judge them or they will ruin this country for the majority of us who are good Belizeans.

  23. The People Had Enough says:

G 4 Life, don’t worry Jah has a place in Hellfire for you too, you scum. You ever ask yourself how many innocents, how many people’s children and loved ones get hurt from these drugs? So it is cool for drug dealers to deal drugs because they can’t find job in trade of 10s, 100s, 1000s of people getting harmed for it?

People like this have been brainwashed by the American Dream of materialism and will do anything to drive a fancy car, live in a big house, lots of jewelry, fancy clothes…life a righteous life and God will provide you with what you need not what you want.

Bun fiah pan all people like you will be a sad fact. Hope you remember these words when you move on from this plain of existence, “Ash shadoo an La ilaha il Allah, Wa Ash shadoo ana Muhammadan Rasool Allah” it will save your already cursed soul.

  24. The People Had Enough says:

EDA that saying is TRUE, however there are exceptions to every rule; free will is a moda, and these guys chose to chase the material treasures, that is fundamentally what’s wrong with Belize from the top down.

  25. The People Had Enough says:

Lexxus God don’t protect willing servants of dajjal you moron.
