Cecil Reneau leads P.U.P. slate in CitCo elections
March fourth, the date set for the City Council and Town Council Elections, is less than two months away and the two main political parties have their horses at the gate. Over the past weekend, the opposition P.U.P. presented its candidates at a low key event and this morning, the man who hopes to dethrone current Mayor Zenaida Moya, Dr. Cecil “Chubby” Reneau, former C.E.O. for the Ministry of Education, along with his team made the media circle. The margins of victory for the incumbent U.D.P. was huge in the last CitCo Elections, as big as by fifty percent. Each U.D.P. candidate gained over twelve thousand votes and the P.U.P. candidates averaged half that amount; between six to seven thousand votes. The U.D.P. gained sixty-four of sixty-seven seats countrywide in 2006. Voter turnout that year for Belize City was fifty-four and a half percent. And again, in the general elections in 2008, U.D.P. trashed the P.U.P. While it will be a very steep climb a year after the last elections, Reneau feels that at the municipal level, the people are ready for change and will vote his party back into city hall.
Dr. Cecil Reneau, PUP Mayoral Candidate
“I am representing the party as its mayoral candidate and my councilors are all with me; a strong team, a beautiful team, a talented team. We are going to take back the city.”
Jose Sanchez
“Taking a look at the previous general elections, the P.U.P. really had a stunning defeat. Do you think you have what it takes to win”
Dr. Cecil Reneau
“Do I have what it takes to win? The Party has what it takes to win, the P.U.P. is a winning party. We may stumble and fall, but we dust off and here we are again and we will win.”
Jose Sanchez
“Now the person you are going up against, Mayor Moya, she is a formidable candidate. She essentially beat Anthony Michael in their caucus. Do you think you can handle Moya?”
Dr. Cecil Reneau
“She beat a person in her party. The mayor now has to face Cecil Reneau; that is the issue. And the issue is her mismanagement, being a false prophet, offering promises and didn’t fulfill. Look at the city, look at West Landivar where you live and I live. Albert Street is money that came from the cane farmers’ project to pave Albert Street. We will do a better job for less money because we have a competent team and we have a dedicated leader. And there is no old P.U.P. or new P.U.P. There is one P.U.P. and we will win. What I know, they cannot manage, they have no vision, they have no plan; they are in chaos. They are dishonest, they are untruthful, they are deceitful, they are workers of inequity. God and the people of this city will judge them come election day.”
