Dept. of Environment sponsors student competitions

The Department of the Environment is encouraging students to think green with two competitions for primary and high schoolers. Primary schools are being invited to submit proposals on an environmentally-friendly project they want to implement in their school. Interested institutions are required to submit a proposal detailing what the project is about, how they came up with the idea, its environmental benefits, what students are required to do for it, as well as a timeframe and budget. Winning project proposals will receive partial funding, a desktop computer, and a set of encyclopedias. In the other competition, secondary school students are asked to submit posters centred on the theme “wetlands”. According to a press release, the objectives of the contests are to increase awareness of the importance of wetlands, their status in Belize, why and how they are being impacted. Winning posters will be used in public education activities and will be exhibited, while the artists will receive computers. Deadline for submissions is January thirtieth. For more information, contact the D.O.E. offices at 822-2542 or visit their website at www.DOE.gov.bz.
