Three Kings documentary film released on DVD

three men of belizeIn 2007 the documentary film “Three Kings”, which features Belizean musicians Paul Nabor, Wilfred Peters and Florencio Mess, made its debut at the Princess Theatre. It has since been a part of the international film festival in Belize. It is also the work of Katia Paradis, who spent four years journeying with the musicians to experience the passion behind creations and to bring together the diverse styles into a ninety minute film. Paradis says the film showcases the lives of the three great talents as they take the stage with performers from around the world. According to the writer, director and producer, it also teaches that there is no need for boundaries because of differences in culture. Paradis is now releasing Three Kings on DVD.

“This movie is about the life of three musicians well known in Belize, Mr. Peters, Mr. Florencio Mess and Mr. Paul Nabor. So these three men—I follow these three men over four years in their daily lives and when they travel abroad in several music festivals to capture the essence of who they are and their work as musicians.”

“What are some of the places and the things that you went to with them?”

“With Mr. Mess we went together to Italy for a music festival. With Mr. Wilfred Peters, we went to Canada to a music festival specialized in accordions. So Mr. Peters played along with other musicians from Canada and several other places in the world. And with Mr. Paul Nabor we just traveled to Honduras to meet another musician, Aurelio Martinez so they could play together.”

“And why specifically these three?”

Katia Paradis

“There’s hundreds of musicians in Belize that I could have record and spend time with. I brought these three together because for me they were a representation of the whole Belize and what I love the most about the country. Mixing together the Creole culture, the Garifuna culture and the Maya was for me a way to show that there’s not boundaries between us but links if we choose to see it that way. I think the DVD format is really accessible to people. It’s a good way of sharing the movie. It’s not always easy to go and find the time and the right moment to screen it on the big screen but having it at home to enjoy it on your TV with your family and friends, I thought it would be something appreciated.”

The newly released DVD is available countrywide for thirty dollars and thirty-five at airports

I’ve seen that movie and this is the best thing that ever came out of Belize. The last scene of the film made me cry, it touched me like no Belizean art has ever done before. I felt the people of this country are worth it and it made me felt good about who I am. Go get this DVD. More things like these need to be done and kuddos to this gial for working on it for so many years.
