Guatemalan police officer crashes into bus
On the other side of the border, today a Guatemalan police officer pled guilty to his charges in connection with a traffic accident. The collision occurred just after four on Wednesday afternoon at the intersection of Western Highway and Western Avenue in Belize City. Court reports are that Mario Orellano was driving a bus on the road towards Belize City, but when he reached the intersection, twenty-nine year old Gerson Rivera tried to overtake him and ended up colliding into the rear of the bus. The bus’ bumper, headlamp, and door were damaged and while no one was seriously injured, a twelve year old girl complained of pain. This morning Rivera appeared in Magistrate’s Court and pled guilty to Using a Motor Vehicle not Covered by Third Party Insurance. He was fined a hundred dollars and ordered to pay the money forthwith by Magistrate Robert Ordonez. On the second charge of Driving without Due Care and Attention, Rivera offered to pay two thousand six hundred and thirty-three dollars in compensation for the damages to the bus and as a result Orellano will not offer any evidence and the charge will be withdrawn.
