James Adderly with the latest sporting statistics

Good evening, I’m James Adderly and this is Sports Monday. We take you immediately to the Succotz Ferry in Cayo for the start  of the eleventh annual Junior Cross Country Cycle Classic which would run for seventy-two miles along the Western Highway where forty-two of the youngest and brightest in the sport are suited up for yesterday’s start.

With the peal of the starter’s whistle the race kicks off to a fast and smooth start as the excitement begins. It’s Juan Umana Flores with the first attempt to run and while he might have swept the first couple of station prizes the early attack led him not completing this particular ride.

The next rider to jerk the peloton is Deezan Spence who took over at Santa Elena and he sweeps the preemies to United Ville where he is challenged by four riders and has to give away to his “Clear the Land” teammate, Richard Vera. Now watch Christoper Andrews of C-Ray makes his move to grab the lead but it would be short lived. Around brick wall we find the main pack deed set on chasing a lead group that that now features five riders. But they’re not really organized in this effort. By the time the race exits Roaring Creek we now have a nine man lead pack. That includes Daniel Choto, Darren Williams, Richard Vera, Deezan Spence, Joel Borland, Austin Armstrong, Kyle Gentle, Christopher Andrews, Mitchell Lewis and Claude Young. At mile thirty-seven, Richard Vera steps out of the nine to grab that station prize but all nine are still together. Around mile thirty-one Vera continues to collect his preemies.

Defending champion, Austin Armstrong then decides to go solo around mile twenty-three. And here he is running through the Hattiville area in total command of the pace. However, he has still not gotten rid of Gentle, Spence, Vera, Borland, Choto, Williams and Andrews. Folks, the run only lasted to mile eight and a half where Austin Armstrong is enveloped by the chase bunch.Around four miles the race is down to their five riders from which the champion will emerge. Now keep your eyes on this finish, Richard Vera pulls the trigger on the outside but it’s Deezan Spence on the inside with the speed. Austin Armstrong is taken out by Kyle Gentle’s back wheel. Deezan Spence of “Clear the Land” Club wins the 2010 Jr. Cross Country Cycle Classic in three hours forty-three minutes and thirty-one seconds. Kyle Gentle of Cayo High Road Cycling takes second, Richard Vera of “Clear the Land” is third, Joel Borland of Indeco Jr. fourth, and here is Austin Armstrong who recovers in time to round out the top five. But let’s encourage the future of Belizean Cycling, Christopher Andrews sixth, Daniel Choto seventh, Darren Williams eight, Oscar Quiros ninth and Steve Dixon makes the top ten. Congratulations to one and all!

In the meantime, the big boys come out to play on Holy Saturday. Join Channel Five for live coverage. We also remind you that Race for the garland will be aired Wednesday night at eight thirty p.m. instead of Thursday. Don’t miss it. sports3

Turning to the football scene, week eight of the Caribbean Motors Cup found FC Belize hosting George Town Ibayani yesterday at MCC grounds and this one was all FC Belize people. In fact we’re only two minutes in when this midfield pass frees up Jeremy James who fires with the left foot gives FC Belize a one – zip and a perfect start. Georgetown look threatening off this corner kick but Elden Linares controls the situation well.

Nevertheless, it’s FC Belize operating on all Cylinders- the fancy post from James leads to this dish to Delvin Jones and it’s pretty hard to miss the target and not even working the keeper from this particular look. Now let’s speed up to the second half action to make our point. We’re fifty minutes in Jones picks Jeremy James on the run and the right foot push finds the back of the net for his second goal of the match and the two – zip FC lead. It must be the do. Six minutes later, Jones embarrasses the Ibayani keeper and his defense live to score into an empty goal for the three – nil margins. At the seventieth minute, Harrison Tasher gets the deflection off this shot to make it a four – nil score. Leon Cadle then gets et by Christopher Gillharry to get on the scoreboard as FC Belize goes to post the five – zip big win step to the head of the class on goal difference.

In other action around the league, San Pedro Seadogs chewed up Paradise Freedom fighters five to one to BDF bombed BRC Blazers three – nil and Hankook Verdes shelled Shahaiah Corozal five  to one. Thus after eight weeks, FC Belize and the BDF both show fifteen points a piece, Hankook  Verdes thirteen, San Pedro ten, George Town nine, Paradise Freedom Fighters six, Corozal four and BRC Blazers still only shows single point.

Looking ahead round nine will play on Wednesday March thirty-first. George Town travels to San Pedro, Shanaiah, Corozal will host FC Belize, BRC Blaze journeys to Hankook Verdes and the BDF will be in the M.C.C.

Grounds against August Paradise Freedom Fighter. All matches start at seven thirty p.m.

In other football news, the Magal Jones under thirty-five football tournament kicks off on April tenth at the MCC Grounds where Kulture will host Cayo. On the eleventh Creative Tiles battle San Pedro out at the Island while at Carl Ramos Stadium Griga takes on Belmopan.

The Basketball news action in the “Balling for Life” tournament saw to Belize Bank Bulldogs seventy-eight to sixty-eight and Ebony Lake burned San Pedro Tiger Sharks sixty-one to sixty.  While in Jr. action, Belize Bank Bulldogs beat Lake-I boys seventy-two to fifty-five while Hold – On Smart sunk Rising Stars sventy six to forty-eight.

Finally in table tennis news David Jones grabbed to 1 ranking in senior A category of the RF&G National tournament with Nelito Ayuso taking 2nd.

At the B category it was Yuning emerging number one and Daniel Habet coming in second.

Victor Owen is the number one player in the Jr. Category with Steve Flowers is the second ranking player.
