Albert Street vendors will be relocated to Battle Field Park

Story PictureGovernment is tightening legislation on the municipal bodies but the work of the council in the city is coming up short. We’ve been promised that the paving of Albert and Regent Streets should be ready by December sixteenth. While that seems to be a slim possibility, there’s no question that when the entire rehabilitation is completed, there will simply be no space for the sidewalk vendors who now occupy Albert Street. Belize City Mayor, Zenaida Moya says that issue should be addressed in the New Year because there are a number of factors involved.

Zenaida Moya, Mayor, Belize City
“We’ll be having them relocated right along the Battlefield Park. This was already discussed with them. A meeting was done and just so they become also a part of the centre of attraction because Battlefield Park is very significant and we would want more persons to start going there. The plans are there to ensure that the Battlefield Park is renovated. We fully understand that the vendors will need a clean place and so that is something that we are trying to get done as quickly as possible.”

“But in order to accommodate them in the rehabilitated Battlefield Park you will need to address the homeless that frequent there, some of them practically live there.”

“Well, that homeless situation is one that has always been an issue and there is an entire team that is headed by Councillor Wayne Usher on behalf of the council. You have the Salvation Army, you have the Mental Health Association, I’m not sure about the Humane Society but there’s a number of persons from the Ministry of Health also, Public Health and all those persons who are a part of this committee and they are the ones how have been given the task of trying to come up with a measure that would help the situation. But again, we’re working with specific entities to get that done as well, noh.”
