“Dignity & Justice for all” is theme for Int’l Human Rights Day

Story PictureToday is the sixtieth anniversary of the signing of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. Stakeholders in the industry including human rights lawyers, NGO’s and the Conscious Youth Development Program were present at the all-day conference at the House of Culture celebrating the theme “Dignity and Justice for all of us.” Trustee on the board of the Human Rights Commission, Cynthia Pitts, said that the two panel discussions slated for today discussed ‘Human rights and the Belizean Family’ and ‘Human Rights and the Fight against Crime.

“Today is the sixtieth anniversary of the signing of the universal declaration of human rights. And it is also the birthday of the Human Right’s Commission of Belize which is twenty-one years in existence.”

“What groups do you have here? What do you hope to accomplish today?”

Cynthia Pitts
“Well we had a guest list of about one hundred plus persons but they were made up mainly of beurocrats, I would say and people who I think that are the converted. So we really targeted the young people and as you see the majority of the audience is made up of youths. We have the peer counseling group from A.C.C. College, we have people from C.Y.D.P., and we have young people’s group from Mahogany Heights. So it’s really to get the youths into—get them more aware of what human rights are, what it is all about, how it functions in our lives. We also have a theme today “Dignity and Justice for all of us”. And the whole idea is to have dignity and justice operate in people’s lives through the declaration of Human Rights.”
