Softball team advances to semi-finals in Central American Games

A contingent of Belizean athletes headed to Panama to compete in cycling, karate, softball, volleyball and athletics in the 2010 Central American Games. The best performances so far are from the female softball team that is heading the semi-finals as number one among the four teams that made it that far. The Female National Team has claimed victory in five of the six games played, losing only once to the home team, Panama. News Five managed to reach the head coach of the team, Greg Moguel who is proud of the team’s performance and confident about moving forward in the competition.

“So far the girls have played well. We played six games in the regular round and we won five. We’ve lost one game which was to Panama and that game went 10-7. I felt that we should have still won that game, but nonetheless we came out as the number one seed team going into the playoffs. And we have our semi-finals as well against Panama so we will face Panama this evening at five o’clock. I think the situation is that they are in much better shape. We had our trainer which I think for many, many years has done a tremendous job and I think one of the things that have plagued us for many, many years is that at this point we normally are fatigued and right now our girls are still strong. I think what we did also was we recognized that hitting was more of a problem than pitching, so we basically focused on that a lot in our training, which we opened up new levels of hitting so they can do much better and also make sure that we got new levels of pitching. So those are the two factors that I think are basically holding up for us and if we continue on the same route there’s no reason we cannot be successful.”

“So you have good expectations for them going into the semi finals.”

Greg Moguel

“Oh yes, definitely. The team is pretty much together and they are looking forward. They are hype about the whole idea that they are going there and we also have our motto, which we came up together before we left Belize; “twenty strong and together we will achieve”. And we made that meaning that everything we will achieve is basically playing the game and everything we do, we do together as a team.”
