Music week: is the future of the industry sound?

Ivan Duran

The state of Belize’s fledgling music industry is once again up for discussion as the annual Music Week is seeing artists and industry insiders alike take a critical look at what needs to be done to improve the business of making music.  Leading the charge is producer and Music Industry Association president Ivan Duran.

Ivan Duran, President, Music Industry Association

“One of the main focus again is the workshops.  We’re having a very interesting songwriting workshop on Thursday.  We’re having a marketing, Belize Music Marketing discussion this evening at six and on Friday we’re having another presentation that will touch on the topic of future trends in the global music industry which of course affects Belize.  And then we have a series of concerts throughout the weekend from Friday, Saturday and Sunday.”

Isani Cayetano

“Can you speak to us on how important these type of initiatives, or these activities are for up and coming Belizean musicians.”

Ivan Duran

“Okay well the main focus of MIAB and music week has always been to take the time and reflect on the status of the music industry in Belize not only by encouraging the members to take the time to think about solutions or things that can be improved for music in general in the country, but also for the public to understand that music is part of a cultural industry where hundreds of artists around the country are involved.”

Among the concerts that will be held this weekend is Carlos Perrote and Friends which will be held at the Bliss Center for the Performing Arts on Friday.

I am totally in agreement with what MIAB claims as its objectives but I am totally dissatisfied with the opportunities kept to themselves. We are always seeing and hearing of the opportunities they are enjoying. This is good for the promoting of the Belizean Music Internationally but I think that they should share the opportunities. They could share the opportunities by publishing the addresses of International contacts to all concerned along with phone numbers and E/mails as the opportunities become available. It would be a healthier way of equally and equitably distributing the available opportunities to all of us in the MUSIC INDUSTRIES in Belize. We have gone through the mill in the music industries in Belize and I am sure you would agree that we have contributed positively.

In my oppinion parole should only be considered for those whose crime is not violent in nature and who have displayed a marked improvement in their behaviour and attitude while incarcarated, in addition to this they should have learnt a marketable skill for easier integration back into society.

  4. Def Jam Records says:

WEll first of all the artist of belize need to start producing quality music……….. this should be a lesson to all belizeans who calls themselves artist…record labels only sign who they can make money off of! they need to step up to the plate and start making positive sense able music ! untill belizeans artist rise above stupid songs like suck mi titi, lolipop, suck and swallow songs that have no meaning and dept ..Belize musicians will never get bigger than selling 20 cd’s if they dnt improve the quality of there music. they should change the name from Punta Rock to Punta Crap! music of belize will never have an international audience outside Belize border and the Belize living abroad! Ras Indio is the only Belize with a hope at this point! Shyne only in Belize because he dint had a choice !! if he was still in U.S he wouldn’t even acknowledge it!

  5. karol says:

its a good thing the gansta artist mavado didn’t come to belize. we don’t need artist like those.!! even in their country they are banged from performing and other neighboring countries because they are not an influence to the youths.

I hope those youths that like those artist get down and read about them first!!
