Mayan Leaders Alliance opposes going to the I.C.J.
While politicians are seeing the decision to go to the I.C.J. as a necessity to end the Guatemalan claim, many Belizeans are not sure. So far the N.T.U.C.B. has publicly said they do not think the I.C.J. is the way to go and late this evening the Maya Leaders Alliance of Southern Belize let its opposition known in a press release. M.L.A. rejects the argument that going before the I.C.J. will guarantee safety and security of the Maya people and calls upon fellow Belizeans to vigorously oppose the political leaders’ attempts to place the future and that of Belize’s into the hands of the International court of Justice, saying quote “We cannot win what we have already have.” Agreeing to take the matter to the I.C.J., continues the release, “only serves Guatemala’s minority elites.” The release then calls upon the government to implement the judgment of the Chief Justice which affirmed their rights to land in southern Belize and also establish permanent security forces presence along the border to deter breaches by Guatemalans.
