B.F.L.A. presents monologue from award winning playwright

Story PictureIn Belize talking about sex, much less genitalia, is a taboo topic. But tonight at the Bliss the subject will take centre stage in an adult only show hosted by the Belize Family Life Association. It is based on excerpts from a book and play by award winning U.S. author Eve Ensler and will feature a string of monologues from women of various backgrounds. According to Director of Education and Program, Melanie Montero, while children are not allowed, men certainly are welcomed.

“The show is for men and women. I would definitely encourage men to come out because I’m sure that they would learn a thing or two from the show. Some of the monologues speak directly with sexual abuse of children, unhealthy relationships and also it speaks about the victims of war—different women experiencing in different parts of the world, primarily in Serbia and these countries where women are raped and often taken as hostages in villages. They would go in and capture the women and children just for sexual pleasure. So we have one of the monologues that capture that vividly.”

“Who are these performers?”

Melanie Montero
“The performers are all Belizeans and they are women from all different walks of life. We have from the police drama club, we have from the nursing profession, we have youths, we have students, we have members of the B.F.L.A. youth advocacy movement, we have members from the theatre company as well.”

The show starts at eight tonight with tickets going at ten dollars. Proceeds from the event will be used to increase access to cervical cancer screening to underprivileged women as well as to provide support for women and families who are affected by HIV/AIDS. It is being held in collaboration with UNESCO.
