Mennonite women have annual quilting exhibit
They are known for providing exquisite designs for quilts. And just in time for the Christmas, the Mennonite Women Quilting Circle from Spanish Lookout are putting the final touches on a wide assortment of quilts that will go on a two day exhibit. The National Institute of Culture and History in collaboration with the group of five talented women are putting on the show and sale of quilts, pillowslips, rugs, baby blankets and cushions among others. The exhibition showcases the artistic creations of the women and News Five was first to get a sneak peek on the exhibit and according to Quilter, Sarah Plett, there is a plethora of designs on sale.
Sarah Plett, Quilter
“We do this job to give an opportunity for people the kind they like, the colour the size and we quilt them by hand we paint them by hand and it’s our pleasure to do something like that to past the time.”
Duane Moody
“What all do you guys do? What all do you have here for sale?”
Sarah Plett
“We have quilts, wall hangings, pillowcases, pillows, some baked goods, and some arts and crafts like pincushions or potholders or different other stuff.”
Duane Moody
“Has the Mennonite community been always doing stuff like this?”
Sarah Plett
“Well, the Mennonites, they have been growing up doing this work, but usually we don’t do it to sell, we just do it for our own use. We make our own clothes, as well as blankets and for about the last ten years, I would say, we have been making blankets to sell.”
Duane Moody
“What is the price range?”
Sarah Plett
“The price range is between two hundred and eight hundred dollars depending on the material and also the design. We have different, we have the plain material and we have more expensive material like cotton and we have the filling cotton as well. So, people who want to have all cotton blankets they can choose that as well.”
The General public is invited to the exhibition which is set for Friday and Saturday from eight a.m. to five p.m. To have custom-made or order any of the items on sale, you can contact Plett at 823-0166, Lena Friesen at 823-0167 or Esther Kornelsen at 823-0017.
