Regional competition winners get heroes welcome
They got a hero’s welcome today. Four students who represented Belize at the Nutrition competition in St. Kitts and Nevis landed at the Phillip Goldson International Airport this afternoon. On hand to receive them were classmates, friends and representatives from the Ministries of Health and Education and ADM Belize Mills. This is the first time that Belize has won the competition and the winners: Santiago Hernandez, Gaby Miranda, Pedro Garcia, and Edgardo Serrut were proud to have represented the jewel and come back as champs. According to them, the competition was fierce and it took hard work to win.
Gaby Miranda, San Pedro High School
“We were so excited, we couldn’t believe it. It’s the first time Belize is wining.”
Duane Moody
“What’s the preparation that it takes for one to compete in something like this?”
Gaby Miranda
“We had to study a lot. We had to sacrifice our weekends; we studied a lot for that.”
Duane Moody
“How long did you have to study for?”
Gaby Miranda
“We studied starting September.”
Edgardo Serrut, Sacred Heart College
“I speak for all of us, we all feel pretty good. we feel pretty satisfied and all our hard work paid off.”
Santiago Hernandez, Orange Walk Technical High School
“It feels beautiful. It’s a beautiful experience; we will never forget it and it really shows that Belizeans know the nutrients, the process of how nutrients reach their body and that’s why we’re brining back the trophy for Belize.”
Duane Moody
“What did it take to do something like this?”
Santiago Hernandez
“Well, a lot of sacrifice and studying. Right after school you have to study, before you go to sleep you study, every weekend you give it up and you go study.”
Pedro Garcia, San Pedro High School
“I think it was very good. I feel very happy, very excited. I want to meet my friends, I want to tell them all about it. We feel like butterflies.”
Duane Moody
“What does it take to compete in something like this; the preparation?”
Pedro Garcia
“It takes commitment, energy, a lot of studying and I can say diet.”
Duane Moody
“Diet, what do you mean by that?”
Pedro Garcia
“Okay, as you may know, the competition is food and nutrition. We’re looking at our nutrition and our food, exercise and diet, which we learned that if we have a good diet we are able to study and remember things.”
