Kriol Projek releases Calendar; CD coming soon
The Belize Kriol Project involves a group of talented musicians and other persons who use creative ways to bring across biblical messages to the public. The project has been in place for the past six years and has produced CDs and calendars targeting the Kriol Community. The group is now releasing a second album consisting of ten religious songs in the Kriol language and a calendar for the year 2009. Their new album is highly anticipated and according to Primary Translator and member of the Project, Yvette Herrera, the album’s name “Yu Mi Yehri” is all about spreading the scriptures through Kriol culture.

“Because we are focusing on the scripture, it’s to get out the word of God in Belize Kriol so that people can understand the word of God in their grass root language. We work hand in hand with the Kriol Council to produce a calendar, the dictionary and so because we need to promote the language so that people can read the scripture when it comes out. The calendar we have been producing for six years now each year and this year we are focusing on the sweets; Belizean sweets like tableta, kotobroot, stretch mi guts, black cake and things like that. Each month has a different recipe and there is a scripture verse at the bottom of the recipe. And that will, you know maybe, provoke people to appreciate our Kriol culture. What we do to produce this CD is we contact the other churches. We didn’t get the best response from the others but we had a workshop earlier this year in April and we gave each group. We split the people up into groups and we gave them a portion of the Christmas story out of the gospel of Luke and whatever portion whatever group got had to come up with a song or songs out of that portion of scripture. So we came up with ten songs and it will be very good and the title song will be “Yoh mi Yehri”.”

“So they’re more brukdong, the traditional Kriol songs?”

“Yes, mostly brukdong, some are a little slower but totally Belizeans.”
The CDs are scheduled for release in mid-December. The calendars on the other hand are available for sale at the Bible Society Book Store at thirty-three Central American Boulevard and the Angelus Press for five dollars each.
