The Volleyball winners are …

The culmination of the Primary School Volleyball competition was staged at the Belize City Centre today. Students from primary schools countrywide convened to battle for the titles of Female and Male Volleyball Champs against rival school teams. Preliminary competitions took place earlier this school year in all six districts. National Sports Coordinator, Charlie Slusher says events like these will make youths more productive.

“Other than the individual awards and the awards, I think the main factor is what these kids can gain socially or even health wise. We’re trying to promote sports, especially at a young age. It will help the kids to have positive alternative instead of just hanging out on the streets. They will probably go on the football field and go somewhere and do something productive and at the same time keep their body and mind in shape and hopefully it can be a lot to our country on a whole as these kids develop and get older. Nobody was excluded from this process. Even if you are in a village far away, you are given opportunity to take part in the rural competition and then we have the urban competition and so on and the districts. So everybody gets an opportunity countrywide to get a chance to represent their district and today the teams that are here are the ones that have been successful in that venture. This is one of the main responsibilities of the Sports Council on a whole. Through the Ministry of Sports we can work very hard to keep the physical education and the sports in the primary school level. It’s being done countrywide and today is a testament of—I don’t want to say the whole process—but today is the national championship.”

The First Female and Male National Champions are Toledo Christian Academy and Stann Creek’s, Saint Alphonsus Primary School. Placing second for females are Richard Quinn Primary School from Georgetown and for the males, Evergreen Government School from Belmopan. Female and Male MVP’s were Angelina Budna and Delphine Augustine.
