P.M. meets Leader of Opposition to discuss initiative to tackle crime
It is not the usual protocol for the Prime Minister to visit with the Leader of the Opposition. Well this morning, they put differences aside and Dean Barrow visited John Briceño at his office on Newtown Barracks. The full press was camped down in the lobby of the building to report on the event. The meeting had to do with obtaining the support of the opposition for the recent initiative to free the nation from the grip of crime and violence. Both men sat down for about one hour and a half to discuss a bipartisan approach to government’s newly unveiled plan to Restore Belize. Following the sit-down a joint statement was issued in which they pledged their partnership in addressing the most pressing problem at hand; crime.
John Briceño, Leader of the Opposition
“We have been very clear that when it comes to the issue of crime, that crime affects each and every one of us and that it is not a political issue. We as a political party, the People’s United Party, have already expressed that in any way we can offer our support as the opposition that we are prepared to work with the government in any way we can to address this very pressing issue.”
Prime Minister Dean Barrow
“There are the subcommittees that will be responsible operationally for the areas we’ve identified. I’ve asked the leader to be sure that his party will nominate a member for each of those subcommittees. I chair the committee at the top which is a kind of inter-ministerial committee. I have promised the leader that after each meeting of that committee I will seek him out in order to brief him so that we can be at all times as much as possible on the same page.”
John Briceño
“I mentioned to him that we are going to have a national executive meeting later this month and I am going to bring it to the national executive for us to be able to discuss and to decide exactly what steps we are going to be able to take.”
Restore Belize was launched a week ago as a detailed and administrative outline with various committees and special purpose groups aimed at addressing the violence and social ills affecting the country.

This is a beautiful moment in our political history.
it’s about time that our leaders get togheter in one agreement, one thought, one mine to see this country forward.
Go deh PM , u are on the right track.
I love to see this!
(Poverty conceive frustrations, and frustrations gives birth to crime) ! that is common sense. What difference will it make if these 2 opposing party come together. Since Belize got it’s so called
Independence we’ve seen only 2 parties in control, and it only take 4 years for the people to
forget what the other party has done previously, so they keep electing these same people in every 4 years, and wonder why they cant find solutions to there ills. The true Govern-Mente , is the People not these parasites who go around having the people thinking that another man can give them Rights and make them feel Safe. Rights are giving by Almighty God (Eloha) Live and Let Live . (Yahweh Tsebaote)
It is good to see this. Remember that unity makes us stronger.
they’re going to call each other stubborn jack ass at the next house meeting over the same matter.. what does briceno know about crime!
This is a good start and the fact that they have decided to bring in professional help from outside our borders is another good move. Lets prepare for the worst and hope for the best.
Look at these two fool’s,remind’s me of those two men on our flag, the spanish man,and the black man, briceno holding the axe,and barrow holding the paddle.Briceno will dig out the dorry, and barrow will paddle him down the river, lmao. This is too funny, all they probably need is to be under the shade of the tree,to florish.
Give them credit for trying to work together.
