Belize gets new equipment to chart its waters
The Gulf of Honduras Project is an initiative designed to update maritime charts and maps in the region. Though it may not sound like a big deal, it has its relevance, especially since those maps have not been updated in many years. Guatemala and Honduras have already received the necessary equipment for charting their waters and today Belize received similar electronic devices. The Regional Director of the Gulf of Honduras Project, Edas Munoz, handed over the equipment to officials of the Belize Port Authority at a small ceremony and explained what the hydrographical equipment would do for Belize.
Edas Munoz, Gulf of Honduras Project Regional Director
“It has four main components, mainly governmental, maritime transportation and also port management. We are here to hand over hydrographical equipment in order to improve the capacities of the five main ports in the region. In order to update the charts and try to get more realistic information about the ports.”

“How much does the equipment cost and who actually will be using it?”
Edas Munoz
“The investment in the equipment is more two hundred and twenty thousand dollars, more than—it’s like, four hundred thousand Belizean. It is the same equipment we are handing over to each country. This is as I said before to improve the capacity of each country in order to get more realistic information.”
Munoz says the Gulf of Honduras Project is funded by the Global Environmental Facility and the Inter-American Development Bank.
