Met office monitoring new water system

Story PictureThere is plenty news to report tonight but first we go to a development in the weather which indicates that another storm is forming in the southwest Caribbean Sea east of Nicaragua and could head our way. The Met Service has an update on this situation.

Frank Tench, Forecaster, Belize Met Service
“Okay, there’s an area of disturbed weather over the southwest Caribbean that’s showing potential for some slow development over the next few days. Currently, it’s not a threat to the country of Belize but projections suggest the system is likely to drift north, northwest during the next two days. During that time some development could occur and at the earliest, by Friday some effects from the system, mainly in terms of coastal showers, are likely as the system heads in the general north to a north, northwest direction.”

Marion Ali
“Okay, in that direction, where would it put that system by Friday?”

Frank Tench
“By Friday the center of the low pressure system should be roughly east of Belize.”

Marion Ali
“Would it be a hurricane you think by then, a projection, a hurricane?”

Frank Tench
“It’s too early to decide what status it could be. all I can say at this time is that the potential for development appears fairly good.”

Marion Ali
“So what should people do right now, monitor closely?”

Frank Tench
“That is correct.”

Marion Ali
“Will it bring again that big amount of rain that we experienced just a few weeks ago?”

Frank Tench
“At this time, the projections and what its doing are likely to keep most of the showers and thunderstorms well to the east of us. The most I would expect would be the flow to get a little more moist and that would favour an increase in coastal showers starting Friday. But, as I said, most of the deep convection would remain well to the east of our coast line.”

Marion Ali
“Okay, but with our terrain already saturated, you project any further flooding?”

Frank Tench
“I don’t see that as a possibility in the near term.”
