Leigh Richardson dies at 84
It is with sadness that we report the passing of Leigh Richardson at the age of eighty-four. A patriot and journalist, Richardson died in New York City this past Monday, where he has been residing for years. Richardson made his own indelible mark in Belizean politics back in the early days of the nationalist movement in the 1950’s as a founding member of the People’s United Party along with Philip Goldson, who is now deceased, and George Price. Richardson broke away from the P.U.P. in subsequent years and along with Goldson formed the Honduran Independence Party which emerged as the National Independence Party and subsequently the United Democratic Party. Historical records show that Richardson also served time for sedition in 1951. This year, Richardson was conferred with the Order of Distinction during the Independence celebrations.
