Mayor Moya says help is on the way for city streets

In Tuesday’s newscast residents in various areas of Belize City were complaining of the terrible conditions of the flood-prone streets. Today we caught up with Mayor Zenaida Moya and Anthony “Boots” Martinez and asked them when and if the problems will be rectified. According to the Mayor, they are assessing the damage to the streets and the Ministry of Works and Cabinet are onboard to assist with the rehabilitation of the streets.

“And in terms of alleviating flooding, things like clearing out the drains making sure culverts are working properly?”

“We have our people on the ground. I’m sure people may have seen our backhoe and our different machinery equipment already working in their areas. Belize City has a drainage problem. We are fully aware of it. We understand that this will not only be work that will be done now, it will be a work that we’ve already been moving forward even with a specific project. We are already appealing. I have met with the Venezuela ambassador to seek funding from his government. We have already been in communication with the World Bank. We’ve already met with their team to already work on a second phase of the City infrastructure project that our government had conducted when they were in office ten years ago. We feel that with these collaborations, not only locally, but nationally and internationally should prove fruitful shortly.”

“There is monies for a proper Jane Usher Boulevard along with the side drain, a canal there, so we are waiting for the relocation project and also we will make sure that the water coming from Lake Independence and Collet Division of which is under the Southside project, the drains are properly cleared so they can get a relief. Part of the problem is the residents that are squatting on the boulevard proper. We are making all the arrangements for the relocation.”
