Family braces rain to picket Lands Department
But while it was raining in Belize City this morning it did not stop a single mother from picketing the Lands Department. Erlene Sanchez and her three children who have been living at 9136 Williams Street in the Rootsville area of Lake Independence for the past ten years must now vacate the property. Sanchez told News Five that she found out only yesterday that the land they have been living on since 1998 has been sold. What’s worst, she has been given only thirty days to move from the land and has absolutely nowhere to go with her three children.
Erlene Sanchez, Evicted from Land
“Dehn mi tell we come in fi di lease paper but when we gone in but—last year when we gone in—somebody tell we that dehn cant find di files. Den Miss Monroe open up di files and show we everything. So we apply again fi di land, so ih seh no worries. Now when I come my husband tell me yesterday I have to come off ah di land. Ih seh Miss Kim Sanchez own di land so we gone dah Lands gone clarify si if dah true and Lands tell me it is true dat Miss Kim Sanchez own di land. I noh know how come Miss Sanchez own di land.”
Marion Ali
“Did they explain to you what happened?”
Erlene Sanchez
“No.”
Marion Ali
“Did you ask?”
Erlene Sanchez
“Yeah, I ask.”
Marion Ali
“And whe dehn seh?”
Erlene Sanchez
“Well, dehn seh—dah my husband have everything. Well dehn seh Miss Gibson just ker ah dah court and she just win di case. She give ah wah paper weh seh dat ih buy di land.”
Marion Ali

Erlene Sanchez
“Well, me noh know. Last time I meet Miss Kim Sanchez behind my house and ih tell me Cordel just sell she di land, from fi she mouth. But I tell she how Cordel wah sell she di land and Cordel give me di land because fi mek we get wah land we have to get wah paper from Cordel saying dat we live back ah Martins and ker it in da lands. And I ker all ah my papers, when I gone today dehn noh have no records ah my papers weh I full out.”
Marion Ali
“So you picketed in front of di Lands Department today but why did you picket there if you’re still not sure who the problem lies with?”
Erlene Sanchez
“Because I tell dehn dah Lands because di man tell me like dis, di man seh dehn jus follow weh deh inna di file. I tell ah but my name deh inna di record.”
Marion Ali
“Is it?”
Erlene Sanchez
“Yes, it was because when I gone last year Ricardo Sanchez own 9136 Rootsville. I went and I see it personally and dehn show me all di file and when I gone today, nothing.”
Marion Ali
“So what you want happen?”
Erlene Sanchez
“Well, I hear dehn done mek wah ruling dat Kim Sanchez own di land. Give me wah piece ah land. I can’t move off ah my house. Lands, because I have my application weh I full out because dehn seh we dehn wah relocate Miss Kim Sanchez to Ladyville. so if dehn could relocate she, why dehn can’t give me wah next piece ah land?”
Sanchez says she is willing to move from the land but needs access to another lot. Tomorrow we’ll find out what the Lands Department’s has to say about this matter.
