James Adderley’s weekly sports update

Good Evening I’m James Adderley this is Sports Monday.

The Belize Bank Super League kicked off the 2010 playoffs with two massive match-ups over the weekend. We take you out to the M.C.C Grounds, where yesterday a surging City Boys United jumped off against a Hattieville F.C. Team that has become a serious contender for this year’s Super League title. The first real threat at goal comes from the visitors from Hattieville when Jarret Davis triggers this spot kick that provides some problems for the veteran keeper Charlie Slusher. We’re only some fourteen minutes in when Diemmercy Pierre red necks this loose ball past the Hattieville keeper Troy Reyes, to give the City Boys a 1-0 lead. Hattieville looks for the equalizer as Roy Smith sends this ball deep to Leon Jones; but Charlie Slusher successfully intervenes.

Its City boys looking for more- Tyrone Muschamp leads to Dalton Cayetano, who is victimized by an unhelpful first touch and at the half the 1-0 lead remains the story.

Immediately, when the action resumes, Raymond Gentle leaves this ball for Tyrone Muschamp, who forces the goalkeeper William Johnson, fresh off the bench, to come up with an incredible save. At the other end, Jarret Davis mounts this individual effort that’s sees him take on all comers only to finish with a shot that missed the target. Pierre then deals to Dale Cayetano, who should have done better with this look at goal from pointblank range. Hattieville comes back with this pass from Roy Smith to Leon Jones, whose acrobatic offering forces Charlie Slusher into a big time diving save to preserve the 1-0 lead. In this press by City Boys, William Johnson must be credited for this timely intervention against Dalton Cayetano, who showed the keeper too much of the ball.

Indeed Hattieville FC dodges another bullet, when Jason Young sets table for Tyrone Muschamp, who squanders a golden opportunity. We must say that this header off the corner kick from Hattieville launched by Jason Robinson can only be deemed disappointing. So City Boys look to close out the show as Raymond Gentle hooks up with Dalton Cayetano, who is obviously taken down form behind by Allan Brooks as the slo-mo reveals but the referee does not make the call. City Boys United, nevertheless, hold on to the 1-0 W against Hattieville FC.

In the other match-up at the Ricalde Stadium Saturday night, Nizhee Corozal shocked Placencia Assassin 2-1. In the meantime the double round-robin playoff format moves into Week Two with Hattieville FC hosting Placencia Assassin inside the MCC grounds this Sunday at four p.m., while Nizhee Corozal plays host to City Boys United same time.

In other football news, Millennium pounded Placencia Pearls 7-1 on Saturday to advance to the Female Football Championships round against Gentle Touch o Esperanza waiting in the wing. This home and away series in the title now gets off this Saturday four p.m. inside the MCC grounds.

Now, let’s head to the Civic Center for Friday night, as the Ballers 4 Life Tournament blasted off, with Belize Bank Bulldogs taking aim at the UB Black Jaguars. And it’s Winston Pratt off to the quick start for UB as he streaks down court to give his team three points the old fashion way. Captain Stephen Williams of UB then shoots over Roscoe Reese to sink the three point shot. So Roscoe Reese makes up for it with this nice delay to go glass for two points for the bank. However, Winston Pratt stays hot and drills this long J- Pratt would lead all scores tonight with twenty-three points going for fifty-six percent from the field and at the end of the first quarter- UB has a ten point lead. In the second quarter Belize Bank is down 27-7, when they come roaring back. Marcel Orosco wants three, he gets three, he would finish with nine. Big Paul Swasey then deals to Rupert Young, who gets a screen from National Team Player, Darwin Leslie, to land this big three point shot- he would finish with sixteen points. At the half UB’s lead is 34-32.

For UB Jaguars, Darwin Leslie comes alive in the third, with attention from four UB players, he lands this baby home. Leslie then attacks from the left side gets the bucket, picks up the foul and sinks the freebie for the three point conversion. He would total a team high twenty points after shooting forty-seven percent from the field. It’s Belize Bank with a 54-51 lead at the end of three. Folks, at the end of fourth quarter, the wheels come off the Belize Bank. Stephen Williams – from the corner with the big three for UB and would put up nineteen points. From the left side now, Williams wants three and gets three; and here he is hitting a third three in a row-nobody puts a hand in his face- UB Jaguars go on to post the 86-69 big W.

In the other senior game in these playoffs over the weekend, the Belmopan Bandits jolted San Pedro Tigersharks 78-72. On the junior ticket, OW Running Rebels ran over Trucks 82-41 and Belize Bank Jr. shut down Hold-On Smart 63-56. Hopefully, there will be better officiating inside the basketball leagues at this point in time.

Hey folks, that’s our show for today. We invite you back same time, same place next week. Jah! Over all, I’m James Adderley.
