Glenford Diego found guilty of attempting to kill a cab driver

Glenford Diego

Nineteen year old Glenford Diego, who has been on remand for attempted murder since November of 2007, is tonight facing a maximum of eighteen years to life in prison when he was found guilty of trying to kill a taxi driver of Belize City.  Today Diego appeared in Supreme Court before Justice Adolph Lucas where a jury of three women and six men deliberated for almost three hours before unanimously finding him guilty of shooting Mar Sacasa on Kraal Road.  According to Sacasa, on the evening of November fifteenth, 2007, at about five-forty p.m., he was returning home from a nearby store when he saw Diego riding a black beach cruiser bicycle.  Sacasa further testified that upon entering his yard Diego approached him and shot him twice, once to the left elbow and once to the thigh.  After a few days in a hospital bed at the K.H.M.H. he survived the ordeal.

In court today Diego denied the allegations giving an alibi that he was in Seine Bight at the time of the shooting and that he was never anywhere in Belize City at the time of the incident.  Diego appeared unrepresented but indicated to the court that he plans to call his mother who is from Seine Bight to speak on his behalf.  Mitigation for Glenford Diego has been set for this Friday, July thirtieth before Justice Adolph Lucas in the Supreme Court.
