Chalillo Dam overflowing, low lying areas affected

And there is word from BECOL that the Chalillo Dam has reached full supply level and that water is overflowing by eleven and a half feet. According to BECOL, while the control features of the facility have reduced the impact of flooding, it expects that the spill over the dam will continue to rise if the rains persist resulting in very high water levels.

Elsewhere, the Belize Audubon Society has announced the closure of seven co-managed protected areas: St Herman’s Blue Hole, National park, Cockscomb Basin Wildlife Sanctuary (Jaguar reserve), Crooked Tree Wildlife Sanctuary, Guanacaste National Park, Tapir Mountain Nature Reserve, Victoria Peak Natural Monument and Actun Tunichil Park.
