Hair braider gets in trouble after squabble with cop

It’s the story of the hair braider versus the cop.  She faces three criminal charges brought on by a police officer. In court Sharmaine Copious was charged with Aggravated Assault upon Constable Halett King, Insulting Words and Resisting Lawful Arrest.  Copious told Magistrate Albert Hoare that she did not understand the charge of Aggravated Assault because she had no weapon nor did she assault the officer.  She pleaded not guilty to all charges and received bail of two thousand five hundred dollars.  PC King claims that he was working at the Tourism Village on Tuesday morning when he heard Copious talking loudly.  King said that he asked her to return to her work area because she was carrying on in a boisterous manner.  King alleges that Copious refused and as she walked past they shoved each other and Copious tried to bite him several times.  But Copious has her own version of how things went.  She said that she was singled out by the officer and she feels it was a personal vendetta.

“When yoh can’t get yoh point across to dehn dehn chance yoh.  Twenty-seventh of July I mi deh eena wah frustration with he when he hit me wah kinda way weh he noh supposed to.  Not because I mi di do anything wrong.  We had wah job fi get done, there’s a lot of aggressive hair braiders out deh.  I noh wah she I aggressive, Miss, but I just out deh fi get wah job, I have kids fi tek care of.  He look like he personally, his name is Hewlett King, he look like he have something personally against me cause dah noh the first time he did this to me.  Now in fi he result fi mek he cud get to me he give me three charges.  He just came up to me of all the other braiders and started wah tantrum.  After dat dah he put ih hand pan me, mek I have to saying the insulting things to ah.  And this dah no the first time ih do me this.  A couple months ago he hit me the same direction.  The last time he hit me in my shoulder piece till I fell pan the ground pan my back.  And I never do nothing. Now when he start to aggress me by pushing me I push him back.  While pushing him back he couldn’t get me in control soh he tek his handcuff and he put my hands way up behind my back and that was hurt so bad. And I tell ah yo di hurt me. He nuh wah respect that he di hurt me. He get more angry and he start to  kneel me with ih knees.  I have wah mark right yah soh pan my belly weh ih knees ih tek it and knock me eena my ribs.  And I fall down pan the ground and when I fall down ih put my head tru ih leg and squeeze me till he cudda cuff me good and bring me off the ground and throw me eena the police vehicle.  That noh right Miss because I never disrespect he.”

Copious is due back before the court on September third.
