Early morning gunshots on Basra Street

Just after nine this morning a hail of bullets was unleashed in the old capital and while that’s not unusual to that area, fortunately no one was hurt. A lone gunman walked past Dave’s Furniture World, which was already opened for business and opened fire. News Five’s Marion Ali was at the scene soon after.

The sound of gunshots ringing out on the streets on Belize City’s south side is now commonplace.  The news is that no one was injured after a mad man emptied a gun as he passed by Dave’s Furniture World shortly after nine this morning.  Police were on the scene within minutes and cordoned off the location.  Officers with high-powered weapons scoured the area but no one was immediately detained for the incident. The manager of Dave’s Furniture World, who preferred anonymity, told us that a man walked past the store and opened fire.  Officers removed more than ten shells from the street just outside the business.  The bullets shattered the glass to the shopping window and dug these depressions in the concrete wall outside.

Inside the employees and customers amazingly were not injured and the manager decided to send home employees and close business for the day.  Dave’s Furniture World is not far away from where last week’s shooting of Jeffrey Roches took place.  The manager told News Five that the store currently has a case before the courts for an armed robbery that occurred at the business last September.  Now she is wondering if the two incidents could be related.  The manager added that the closure of business for the day adds to the already slow business experienced in the past few months.  Police continue to investigate the attack on the furniture store.  Marion Ali for News Five.

No one has been arrested for this morning’s shooting.
