Belizean cyclists win the coveted green jersey in Guatemala
Belizean young athletes are participating in numerous regional sporting tournaments. One group that took part in cycling tournaments in Canada and Guatemala are back feeling proud for their accomplishments. The under sixteen cycling group called Team Belize did not come back empty-handed. The team brought back the coveted green jersey from Guatemala and a trophy. They along with their manager, Eduardo “Dito” Juan, stopped by our studios today to sport their prizes. Juan says the achievement is one he feels proud of because it did not come easy.
Eduardo “Dito” Juan, Mgr., Belize Selection Cycling Team
“We went with our B junior team because we had sent the A junior team to Canada. So we sent six of our boys to Canada and we took six to Guatemala. What we had done, we had put together a selection of the various teams that we have in the Cayo District. I was extremely satisfied, I was happy with the performance of our B team in Guatemala. Why? Because for the past six years they have been sending junior teams to Guatemala and they could have never accomplished what we accomplished. We came back with a trophy and several other prizes from our sprinter. Our sprinter did extremely well. He won the three stages of the sprinting. We had a set up, our other guys supported these. They made sure that we ensure the green jersey, which has never been won by Belize. Hence, we went ahead and we had our climber. Unfortunately, that is Mr. Huang. We got into an accident with a car over in Guatemala and he still rode but he couldn’t ride good enough to continue our achievements. I found out that the Guatemalan terrain was extremely high, higher than anything we have ever ridden before. Not withstanding that, our boys did exceptionally well.”
