UDP convention on Sunday; new chairman to be elected
Minister Faber is also one of the names on the ballot for this Sunday’s convention of The United Democratic Party in Orange Walk Town. Faber will be going up against the likes of his cabinet colleague, John Saldivar and Ruben Campus, a former minister and an old hand in Orange Walk politics. The three are contesting the post of Chairmanship that is being vacated by Minister of Police Doug Singh after eleven years in that job. According to UDP insiders, Faber is a favorite of the PM but that does not give him entitlement to the chair. That will be decided by the five hundred delegates who will vote on Sunday. Prime Minister Dean Barrow left the country on Wednesday for personal reasons but is expected to be back for the convention.

Many years ago when what we use to call crazy house was at the where the barrack, I went to see somene that was confined to the istitution. At the same time a young man was sent there to be interview to be employed there, who got a hock of his like upon enteing the facility when one of the patience approached him and in a agressive manner asked the young man if he though he was crazy? The incedent was enough to change discourage the young from accepting the job. Why do reference ths experience? Its the foundation for what I’m about to say about the mental well being of many of our fellow citizens as we watch the many senseless violence that are taking place amongst us that seem to be getting worst with each passing day by individuals we believe to be mentally sane and should be held responsible for their actions.
The book Emotional Intelligence by Daniel Goleman shed much light on the complexities on human mental well being why we should not take for granted our emotional stability. When a person is in a heated room the temprature may not feel as hot until the uposit come into play, so it is with social interaction. Prior to traveling away from Belize I took it for granted that it was the norm for a boss to be verbally offensive. Society is begining to realize that inflicting body blows to a child is not necessary to instill decipline. Even the breaking in of a horse it is discoverd that there are many successful techniques other than the old method of brutalizing the animal.
On page 329 of Emotional Intelligence the chapter “A last word” ‘mentioned the disturbing fact about the consern and causation of teen violence with gun in the American society, the same as is now the Belize experience. The article note the ease of owning guns by teen agers that are at the age of potential criminality, and what use to be a fist fight is now is carried out at the barrel of a gun. The other reason given is that there is a shortage of the ability to settle disputes because these teen agers has not been taugt the essentials of handlng anger or resolving conflicts possitively. he phyclogist goes on to point out that the lact of empathy impulse control make it easy to take the life of another person because that feeling is totally absent form their emotion.
As we observe the behaviour of the many accused for capital murder the above statement bear much truth as far as I’m consern. I see only a blankness in the personality of these indviduals which refelect or the lact thereof, very little positive energies on which to build a restructuring of the personality. As we restle to right this terrible wrong on the society, I whish and hope that as many Belizeans would goe a copy of the book, in that it will give us a clear road map to help to diognose the root cause of the problems that our youths are face with.
