Sports aficionado passes away

There is word that the Belize City Council today lost one of its most active sports activists and security guards.  Leroy Martinez, who played on the Council’s football, softball and basketball teams, was reportedly rushed to the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital this afternoon after he started to suffer from respiratory problems.  Doctors tried to revive him but Martinez reportedly went into shock and died a short while later.  As we reported earlier, Martinez is well known sports aficionado. But he will also be remembered for his temporary ban from softball in 1999 after he assaulted softball umpire and media colleague, Patrick Jones.  An autopsy is scheduled on Martinez’ body on Friday.
