Belize Post Office celebrates World Post Day

Story PictureAside from postmasters and mailmen, not many people may know that October ninth is commemorated as World Post Day. To kick-off the celebrations, on Wednesday, instead of delivering mails, the Belize Post Office handed out meals to homeless and needy individuals at the Battlefield Park in Belize City. Today, in conjunction with the Universal Postal Union, B.P.O. put on an exhibition for students and the public at their North Front Street compound, highlighting their accomplishments and advances throughout history. The theme for this year’s World Post Day is “A Postal Sector Resolutely Looking Towards the Future” and according to Mail Supervisor, James Gabriel, it is fitting as they are seeking ways to become more relevant and competitive.

“The theme is indeed a timely one because today it is very important for our customers to know that despite all the technological changes that are happening out there, the post office remains to be relevant to today. People usually would like their packages as quickly as possible. It is with this in mind that the post office created what we call an express mail service. So that by you utilizing that service you can get your packages from abroad within two to three days.”

“It is with this that the IPS Light will be effective right?”

James Gabriel
“Right, the IPS Light is an internet based programme that is exclusively for post offices. The post office uses this programme to do its necessary paperwork. For example, the IPS Light is very instrumental in terms of tracking items. For example, if you were to send an item and for some reason you would want to know of that item’s delivery, the post office will then tap into the IPS Light System and that will give us an indication as to the status of your item.”

Tomorrow at Old Belize, the Post Office will honour three of its retirees during a banquet.
