Jewelry worth $15,600 stolen from tourist’s hotel room

Cayo is the district that is becoming known for crime as well as for its natural beauty. According to reports from San Ignacio, an American tourist visiting the area lost valuables worth fifteen thousand six hundred dollars that were located in her hotel room.  Maryann Mix, an American Environmental Planner, of Harvey Idaho, is staying at Martha’s Guest House on Bullet Tree Road in San Ignacio Town.  Mix told the police that between Thursday and Saturday last week, valuable but personal items disappeared from her room at Martha’s Guest House.  While she was out of the room, someone stole one flower shaped, diamond studded earring valued at five thousand dollars; one round shaped earring carved from white gold valued at five thousand dollars; and one rectangular pink sapphire square medal on a tri-color chain valued at five thousand six hundred dollars.

when it come to a story like this, not true is my first instink. how can an envirnmental planner be walking around belize with that kind of jewelry .

  2. BZNinCALI says:

This does not reflect well on us but all of us who travel know that we have two options when we do; leave our valuables at home or stay in a hotel that offers a safe. If this woman has made it all the way to Belize, she has traveled in the states & that is just one of those common sense things that even five star hotels make sure guests are aware of. WE ARE NOT RESPONSIBLE FOR ANY LOST OR STOLEN ITEMS. DO NOT LEAVE VALUABLES IN YOUR ROOM.

  3. MADDYVANDIJK/DEREALIST says:

This is a shame for the business, really.
I suppose the tourist fear has been conformed, after all stuff like this is expected to happened in a country like Belize .

Someone working there stole the stuff, check your staff, fire him/her before they can say Sorry.

  4. Magician says:

This jewelry theft story reminds me of the Texan cowboy that was financially strapped, sold his cattle down in Mexico, went back to Texas, filed a police report saying that his cattle was stolen. The police report allowed him to file an insurance claim………… which was paid. He laughed all the way to the bank. Unfortunately, one night he got drunk and spilled the beans on himself.

Who knows? Perhaps we might see some beans spilling in this jewelry story. You can never tell.

to me the guest house should be accountable for this loss of property, first of all who all have access to the rooms? check as the ladies that work there. is there in cameras in the guest house on the halls? i would have sued the guest house for my losses since entering a room of guest is disrespectful unless the ladies need to make room service but honest ladies not burglars. mein bad name for this guest house and visitors be aware of this things.

  6. Kirsten says:

I agree with the people who believe that it’s a scam. The woman could be telling a lie to get money if her stuff was insured. True or Not the Guest house now have a bad name.

  7. cindy says:

This is what tourist always say when they want money. ive been working in the industry and studying these same kind of people. whenever a tourist arrves they are asked to put their properties in the safe box. hence she didnt do that she is responsible for her own belongings. how sure can you be that she brought these jewelries? get a research on her back ground she might have good experience scamming hotels like these.
get real how in the world is she going to be backing around this amount of jewelry? dont you think they would have questioned her at the airport?

  8. BELIZEANGYPSY says:

Belizean Pride your comment is without merit, when you check into a hotel, etc. you are responsible for any items of value. Most of the times places have a safe but if they dont then why would you be stupid and careless to leave your jewelry in an unattended room.

This particular individual has been very inconsistent with her bag of lies. she started off by telling the guesthouse that she left her purse on the table in the restaurant area, then she went on to tell the police that it went missing from her hotel room…. ( does this sound sketchy) (do i hear, insurance fraud). she also stated that her valuables went missing from thursday, why then did she decide to report it to the guesthouse until sunday night. no police visited the establishment until yesterday….what a very shady way of doing things don’t you think.
When she checked into the palms resort in San Pedro, she was asked about her trip to Cayo and she replied that she had and “EXCELLENT TIME”. This woman is a 60+ year old person and the partner she is with is 17 year old belizean, maybe she should do a check on him!!!!!!!!!
The guest house will be going to any measures needed to clear their name of such accusations.

Working in the hotel industry for so many years you can tell this is a scam. I always tell tourist please be cautious not because you are on vacation means that your common sense is on vacation too…Be careful of who you mingle with, lots of locals (these are the drug sellers and users by the way) will come to you and be the nicest person ever treat you like no one has ever treated you, they get your trust you take them to your room then guess what the next day all your things are gone. The hotel is not responsible for this that is why there is a front desk where there is a safety box give your receptionist if you don’t trust the hotel and decide to take it to your room then so be it. How on earth can there be a robbery if there are no signs of forced entry, oh and don’t forget you mingle with the locals that sell drugs and use drugs and you welcomed them into your room
A few years back had some girls say they lost all their money and passport from the room, police came no sign of forced entry nothing at all, well guess what no one (staff) had gone to their room the entire time, when the police searched the room guess what they found money and passport under the mattress, these girls were so ashamed…SCAM
Another time a tourist picked in a local girl an hour later the girl passed the front desk stopped for 2 minutes then said please tell him I had to leave that he took long….The tourist came running in a towel 15min later and asked about the girl said she had just robbed him 500.00usd. He had paid her for sex and went to take a shower and when he came out the girl+money was gone….
So many stories I am amazed

  11. Manford says:

There are thieves every where even in five stars hotels. Protect yourself and property at all times as best as you can. Items was stolen from me at one of the big Hilton hotel. There was a TV program that showed how hotel employes went about searching the logauge of guests to see what they could steal. There are some things that a hotel may take responsbility for, such as when someone help his/herself with my expensive underwears. I reported it to the hotel management and they paid me for it. Jewel and money should be placed in a safety box at the hotel if the hotel provide such service, if not, you are on your own logically speaking.

  12. daveyt says:

If the B & B had a Safe, the guest should, and probably was offered its use to hold valuables and personal documents. Common sense dictates that you use the safe, and carry a photocopy of your Passport with you.

She didn’t, and therefore the valuables were her responsibility – end of story.

One of the first questions her insurance company will ask wil be “Were the valuables in a secure place?”. Her answer will be no, and as she wasn’t wearing them when they were “Stolen”, it’s unlikely that the insurance will pay her anyway.

  13. belizean girl says:

this sounds like just a scam to collect insurance money for her jewelry….if it was me i would have reported the incident the same day it occurred!!!….wouldn’t you? If i was the owner of the guest house i would sue her…..she isn’t even sure where she lost her jewelry. I have been to the guesthouse and at the office there is a sign that says they have a safe in case you want to leave valuables….don’t you thin k it’s weird that she did not leave it there if she had them with her!!!!!

  14. Islander says:

SOUNDS LIKE “INSURANCE SCAM BY TOURIST”. The other day a client of mine had a nice Iphone 4 and I was interested. He said I’ll sell it to you for cheap and then go report it stolen and get insurance to pay for it, I sent him away and didn’t bother waste one more second of my time speaking to a person like that.

Its because of people like that, that it is very expensive to insure your stuff.

  15. Kay says:

SCAM ARTIST!!! What does she think? That Belizean hotels are all “flea bag motels” like they have in the US that she can actually pull that off. If her insurance company believes her they are probably the most popular company to Scam Artists. You’ll tell me she didn’t go on the Web and research on “poor little” Belize. She did her home-work she knows our crime rate and the rate at which these crimes are solved…if they are ever solved. Claims she had the jewelry stolen in the hotel…file insurance claim…collect check and she still got her gems stashed away in a safe place….Chi Ching!

  16. Elgin Martinez says:

She thinks every one in Belize is stupid get the f out of here white girl. You probably live on food stamps in the States and you want to come to our country and accuse people of thiefing your …. who even know if this fool is an enviromental planner?Who checked her cridentials?

  17. CASHMONEY says:

    SHE’S LYING!!!!!!!!!! IF I HAD THOSE KIND OF JEWERLY …I’LL GO 5 * STAR……TRUST ME….NOT GUEST HOUSE……SHE’S BSING!!!!!

  18. MADDYVANDIJK/DEREALIST says:

I was robbed twice in Belize, jewelery and other items stolen from our private room from hotels that considered themselves as four stars, but we never reported it to the police, came back home and could not claimed any money from my lost. I learned my lesson from our visits to Belize, I insured everthing I take on my vacations every year.

This woman is or is not a victim, where is the proof that she is trying to commit insurance fraud, none. From here on more thieves will get away because the victim is being blamed or bad mouthed,…………………………………………………………………. where is the justice in that.

  19. Janet Olson says:

this has become such a common practice these days i became so angry last weekend when this thing happened to me i contacted this company and they recover my stolen identity info http://bit.ly/9AmT7f

This is an unfortunate story for the guesthouse and the lady involved. As someone who has travelled all over the world I know (as scuba mom says) you cannot let your guard down whilst on vacation. This type of incident occurs all over the world everyday, it’s not specific to Belize. I don’t believe it is a scam; it is just unfortunate that this lady lost her jewelleries, and I hope that they were insured. I know sometime they have sentimental value that no monetary value can replace. This is when you have to become philosophical to come to terms with the lost. I was a victim of a pickpocket only last week. My iphone taken from my handbag, which was next to me in a crowded environment, I had insurance and so it is being replaced. This didn’t happened in Belize, it happened in a very “rich country” with a “stable’ government. The point is: don’t blame the government, don’t blame Belizean people, don’t blame the country, thieves have been around since the beginning of time. Many hotels I have stayed in have emphasised that valuable items should be placed in the safes provided; I wonder the hotels in Belize would consider this option. Another point is that people should look out for anyone trying to sell these items to report it to Police. Or perhaps although it may be controversial this lady would offer a small reward to anyone who provides information leading to the recovery of her belongings.

  21. Michele toland says:

Martha should sue that a crazy woman for posturing as a victim of theft at her guest house. Marthas is renowned around the world for class service—–check out her ratings on trip adviser. Her service record is impeccable not to mention her attention to detail.
I stayed with Martha more than once and was informed of safety deposit safes for the protection of valuables.
As far as I can tell, this accuser is trying to scam marthas and or an insurance company. What is an old woman doing with a teenager as her lover anyway. Has she no self esteem.
Stand strong and fight back Martha–you have the best hotel in San ignacio

  22. So disappointed says:

Charlotte a.k.a”Your Ladyship Buying stolen jewelry in Belize is big business so if that jewelry was stolen she can be assured she will never see it again and someone that have no idea of the value will be wearing it or making it over into something else. Belize people only laugh at you when you are a victim so they will not give any information to help catch the culprits. I know it first hand as a victim of theft in Belize.

  23. cindy says:

For the tourist that lost jewelries are you guys so stupid to travel with jewelries. every where you go you know that they steal so why take them. they should check every tourist that comes in to the country and check what are all of their belongings so that they cant claim they lost jewelries or other stuff.
come on jade is common now a days and maybe she sleeping with some man that stole her jewelry cause that is all thes people come for sex.

  24. Bruce Kinnaird says:

I was married to this woman for four years and never saw her wear a piece of jewelry worth more than $500.
