Theft and burglary charges; a regular day at Magistrate’s Court

Devon Neal

There’s a bad case of sticky fingers going around and crimes of dishonesty keep popping up in court. Today Devon Neal and Darren Jones both appeared in Magistrate Court, charged with theft and burglary respectively. Neal was accused of snatching a gold chain from around the neck of thirty-five year old Shelly Moss as she headed home from work on Tuesday. Neal was unrepresented and pleaded not guilty to the charge of Theft. Bail was granted in the sum of four thousand dollars, which he paid this afternoon.

Darren Jones

Meanwhile, Darren Jones had two charges to answer to—Burglary and Handling Stolen Goods. The charges against him are related to a burglary at the home of Sonia Jones in Hattieville. According to Sonia, she left her home on August fourteenth and returned on the fifteenth to find that a window and door were damaged. A skill saw, assorted groceries and a video game, all valuing just under five hundred dollars were missing from inside. Police later recovered the saw and the video, which Darren had in his possession. Nonetheless, he pleaded not guilty to both charges and bail was set at three thousand five hundred dollars. His case was adjourned to October fourth.

The court need to have a stiffer penaltiy for commiting theft the whole justice system in belize is too lax the penality does not suit the crimes it need to be stiffer.

These crimes are going to continue untill the magistrated decide to convict these criminals.

Its bs that they even offer bail to these people..They just gonna do it again. The Goverment need to stop looking at bail money for once and not even offer these thugs bail at all cause more than likely they will pay and the same day go out and do the crime all over again

u should be a reporter deedee…jeje….on a serious note, put stiffer bails….they always meet their bails..so if they got the money for they bail, why do they steal?

I say, with evidence and catching them with the items, chop off one finger everytime they steal. This is not harsh since in other countries, the whole hand is severed.

I think it would be interesting to know how these low down criminals are able to meet their bail money so easily as if though they are working for a syndicate that sends them out to commit these crimes and are footing the bail money whenever they get caught and also the legal fees for their lawyers. I would imagine that the black market and the pawn shops are flourishing in Belize with the sale of stolen goods, would seem like someone should be tracing these bail money and attorney fees to see where they are coming from you might be surprised it might just put a damper on criminal activities around Belize and also set up some sting operation to see who all is encouraging the sale of stolen goods but then if police officers are involved with this it will need some creativity to pull it off.

i am always amazed at how these petty criminals look to thief a gold chain from around someone neck plead not guilty and pay the $4000 bail…where did that come from, stop taking bail from these return criminals lock them up till the case comes to court, its the only jail time they will do as once they are in court the case will be dismissed “lack of evidence” “misplaced case file” or whatever else is the norm.
